Thomas Knox (bishop)
Thomas Knox (1588–1628) was a Scottish prelate from the 17th century who served as Bishop of the Isles. Life He was born in 1588 the son of Andrew Knox, Bishop of the Isles, and Elizabeth ("Bessie") Knox, his cousin. He was educated at Glasgow University graduating MA in 1608. He received crown provision to the Deanery of the Isles on 4 August 1617Watt & Murray, ''Fasti Ecclesiae'', p. 270. and started serving as a minister on Tiree in 1618. He is the first Dean of the Isles to be known by name (apart from the famous Dean Monro, a century earlier), though an unnamed cathedral dean was recorded in 1572, and the "dean and chapter of Iona" are attested again on 5 June 1576. On 24 February 1619 he was granted crown provision to succeed his father as Bishop of the Isles, his father later becoming Bishop of Raphoe in Ireland. Thomas Knox (circa 1640 – 11 May 1728) was an Irish politician. He sat in the Irish House of Commons for Newtownards from 1692 to 1693 and then for Dungannon from 1695 to 1727. Thomas George Knox
Sir Thomas George Knox, KCMG (1824–1887) was an Irish soldier and a diplomat, serving as consul-general in Siam from 1868 to 1879. Life He was the eldest surviving son of James Spencer Knox, D.D. (1789–1862), rector of Maghera, County Londonderry, and his wife Clara, daughter of the Right Hon. John Beresford, and was grandson of William Knox, bishop of Derry. On 17 April 1840, he was appointed ensign of the 65th Foot and, on 7 October 1842, was promoted to a lieutenancy in the 98th Foot. After serving with the 98th Foot in China and India, Knox sold out in December 1848. He subsequently served with the Siamese Army from 1851 to 1857. Siam was under Mongkut, who was opening the country to the West, and Knox functioned as a military adviser. He began by training the troops of Pinklao, who ranked as Front Palace. Sir Thomas Malcolm Knox (28 November 1900 – 6 April 1980) was a British philosopher who served as Principal of St Andrews University from 1953–1966 and Vice-president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1975–1978. Biography Knox was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, on 28 November 1900, the son of Scottish Congregationalist minister James Knox and his wife Isabella Marshall. He was educated at Bury Grammar School and the Liverpool Institute, and then at Pembroke College, Oxford where he obtained a first-class degree in Literae Humaniores in 1923. He then worked as secretary to Lord Leverhulme at Lever Brothers before running the business interests of Lever Brothers in West Africa. His first wife died in 1930 and in the following year he became Bursar-Oxbridge Fellow, Fellow and lecturer in philosophy at Jesus College, Oxford, later becoming a Fellow and Tutor. Thomas Knox, 1st Viscount Northland (20 April 1729 – 5 November 1818), known as The Lord Welles between 1781 and 1791, was an Irish politician. Background Thomas Knox was the son of Thomas Knox and Hester Echlin. He died on 5 November 1818 aged 89. Political career Knox was Member of Parliament in the Irish House of Commons for Dungannon from 1755 until 1781. In 1781, he was elevated to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Welles, of Dungannon in the County of Tyrone. In 1791 Knox was ennobled as Viscount Northland, of Dungannon in the County of Tyrone. With the Act of Union and the abolition of the Irish Parliament in 1800, he became one of the 28 original Irish Representative Peers in the British House of Lords from then until his death.
