Thomas Kelly (New Zealand Politician)
Thomas Kelly (1830 – 20 September 1921) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in Taranaki, New Zealand. He represented the Town of New Plymouth electorate from to 1879, and then the (renamed) New Plymouth electorate from to 1884, when he was defeated. He then became a member of the Legislative Council from 1892 to 1913. In 1893 Kelly, a new councillor was at the centre of a drama that led to the passing of the Women's suffrage bill into law. Premier Seddon had expected to stop the bill in the upper house, but found that one more vote was needed. Kelly had left himself paired in favour of the measure, but Seddon obtained his consent by wire to change his vote. 1875–1876 New Zealand General Election
The 1875–1876 New Zealand general election was held between 20 December 1875 and 29 January 1876 to elect a total of 88 MPs in 73 electorates to the 6th session of the New Zealand Parliament. The Māori vote was held on 4 and 15 January 1876. A total of 56,471 voters were registered. Background Political parties had not been established yet; this only happened after the 1890 election. The previous parliament had 78 representatives from 72 electorates. Oliver Samuel
Oliver Samuel (1849 – 11 January 1925) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament from Taranaki in New Zealand. Born in Saint Helier, Jersey in 1849, Samuel emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1855. He was educated at Nelson College from 1863 to 1865.''Nelson College Old Boys' Register, 1856–2006'', 6th edition (CD-ROM). In 1883, he married Rosamond Carrington, a daughter of the surveyor Octavius Carrington who, alongside his brother Frederic Carrington, was regarded as a father of New Plymouth. He represented the New Plymouth electorate from to 1890, when he retired. On 22 January 1907, he was appointed to the Legislative Council. He was reappointed on 14 July 1914 and 14 July 1921. He remained a member until his death on 11 January 1925. From 19 November 1918 until his death, he was Chairman of Committees. On 24 December 1919, he was appointed King's Counsel. Harry Atkinson
Sir Harry Albert Atkinson (1 November 1831 – 28 June 1892) served as the tenth premier of New Zealand on four separate occasions in the late 19th century, and was Colonial Treasurer for a total of ten years. He was responsible for guiding the country during a time of economic depression, and was known as a cautious and prudent manager of government finances, though distrusted for some policies such as his 1882 National Insurance (welfare) scheme and leasehold land schemes. He also participated in the formation of voluntary military units to fight in the New Zealand Wars, and was noted for his strong belief in the need for seizure of Māori land.
