Thomas Jefferson Strait
Thomas Jefferson Strait (December 25, 1846 – April 18, 1924) was a U.S. Representative from South Carolina. Biography Born in Chester District, South Carolina, Strait attended the common schools of Mayesville, South Carolina, and Cooper Institute, Mississippi. During the Civil War entered the Confederate States Army in 1862 and served throughout the war, first in Company A, Sixth Regiment of Infantry, and later as sergeant in Company H, Twenty-fourth Regiment, Gist's brigade. He engaged in agricultural pursuits. He taught school in Ebenezer, South Carolina, in 1880. He was graduated from South Carolina Medical College at Charleston in 1885 and practiced medicine. He served as member of the State senate 1890-1893. South Carolina's 5th Congressional District
The 5th congressional district of South Carolina is a congressional district in northern South Carolina bordering North Carolina. The district includes all of Cherokee, Chester, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Union and York counties and parts of Newberry, Spartanburg and Sumter counties. Outside the rapidly growing cities of Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and Lake Wylie the district is mostly rural and agricultural. The district borders were contracted from some of the easternmost counties in the 2012 redistricting. The district's character is very similar to other mostly rural districts in the South. Democrats still hold most offices outside Republican-dominated York County. However, few of the area's Democrats can be described as liberal by national standards; most are fairly conservative on social issues, but less so on economics. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. It was fought between the Union ("the North") and the Confederacy ("the South"), the latter formed by states that had seceded. The central cause of the war was the dispute over whether slavery would be permitted to expand into the western territories, leading to more slave states, or be prevented from doing so, which was widely believed would place slavery on a course of ultimate extinction. Ebenezer or Ebenezerville is a neighborhood of Rock Hill, South Carolina located at latitude 34.957 and longitude -81.046 along Ebenezer Road in the northern part of the city. The Confederate States Army, also called the Confederate Army or the Southern Army, was the military land force of the Confederate States of America (commonly referred to as the Confederacy) during the American Civil War (1861–1865), fighting against the United States forces to win the independence of the Southern states and uphold the institution of slavery. On February 28, 1861, the Provisional Confederate Congress established a provisional volunteer army and gave control over military operations and authority for mustering state forces and volunteers to the newly chosen Confederate president, Jefferson Davis. Mayesville, South Carolina
Mayesville is a town in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 731 at the 2010 census, this was a decline from 1,001 in 2000. It is included in the Sumter, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town was named for the Mayes family of early settlers after the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad cut through the Mayes' property and began as Mayes Station in 1852, replacing an earlier name of Bradleyville, South Carolina. Fortunes made in cotton and tobacco created wealthy landowners in this area of South Carolina. Mayesville served the local area as a place to process and sell these products and to obtain supplies.
