Thomas Holmes (1817–1900) was a mortician who is often thought of as the "father of American embalming". Early life He was born in Brooklyn,Tom Hickman, Death - A User's Guide, London 2002, p. 102. During his childhood he became interested in the medical profession, and (although records from the time are vague and incomplete) is believed to have graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1845. Thomas William Holmes VC (14 October 1898 – 4 January 1950) was a soldier in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, during the First World War. Holmes is the youngest Canadian to ever win the Victoria Cross. Early life Although Holmes was born in Montreal, Quebec, his family was from Owen Sound, Ontario. Thomas Holmes, 1st Baron Holmes (2 November 1699 – 21 July 1764) was a British politician who was Vice-Admiral and Governor of the Isle of Wight (1763–4) and sat in the House of Commons between 1727 and 1774. He managed elections in the government interest in the Isle of Wight during the 1750s and 1760s. Early life Holmes was baptized on 2 November 1699, the eldest son of Henry Holmes, MP, of Thorley, Yarmouth and his wife Mary, illegitimate daughter of Sir Robert Holmes, MP, of Thorley. He married Anne Apsley, widow of Colby Apsley, and daughter of Henry Player of Alverstone, Hampshire. Education Holmes received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, the student of Peter Saul and Linda Montano. They received a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California Los Angeles in 2002 where they studied with John Baldessari, Mary Kelly, Paul McCarthy, Lari Pittman, Pipilotti Rist and Wolfgang Tillmans. The artist worked briefly for Richard Tuttle in 2005. Exhibitions Holmes mounted their first solo museum show Temporary Monument' in 2013 at the Kunsthalle Bern.
