Sir Thomas Hislop, 1st Baronet
Sir Thomas Hislop, 1st Baronet, (5 July 1764 – 3 May 1843) was a senior British Army officer of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Serving exclusively in colonial campaigns, Hislop fought in the West Indies between 1796 and 1810 and subsequently in India, where he was a senior commander during the Third Anglo-Maratha War. Although his ability as a general was praised, Hislop came under criticism in Parliament for his heavy reprisals against forces of the Maratha Empire, particularly at Talnar, where he ordered the execution of over 300 men. He was also known for financial profligacy, losing large sums of money investing unsuccessfully in the Americas. Despite these problems, Hislop was later made a baronet and a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, serving in his retirement as an equerry to Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge Life Hislop was born in 1764, the third son of Lieutenant Colonel William Hislop of the Royal Artillery of the British Army. ... Thomas William Hislop
Thomas William Hislop (8 April 1850 – 2 October 1925) was the Mayor of Wellington from 1905 to 1908, and had represented two South Island electorates in the New Zealand Parliament. Early life He was born in Kirknewton, West Lothian in 1850. His father, John Hislop, was the first secretary for Education in New Zealand. The family left Scotland in 1856 on the ''Strathmore'' and landed in Port Chalmers. They settled in East Taieri. He was educated by his father until the age of twelve, and then attended John Shaw's Grammar School (Albany Street, Dunedin), Dunedin High School and University of Otago, where he studied law. He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1871, only a few months after his teacher from Shaw's Grammar, Robert Stout (who later became Premier and then Chief Justice). Thomas Hislop (mayor)
Thomas Charles Atkinson Hislop (29 November 1888 – 21 June 1965) was a New Zealand politician, lawyer, and diplomat. He served as the mayor of Wellington from 1931 to 1944. Early life and family Born in Wellington on 29 November 1888, Hislop was the son of Thomas William Hislop, who was mayor of Wellington from 1905 to 1908, and Annie Hislop (née Simpson). His grandfather was John Hislop. He attended Wellington College, and then the University of Cambridge where he graduated in law. In 1911, he was called to the bar as a barrister-at-law of Inner Temple, London. In 1921, Hislop married Ailsa Craig Dalhousie Ramsay at St John's Church, Wellington. Legal and military career Hislop joined the Wellington legal firm of Brandon, Ward and Hislop in 1912. He enlisted in the Wellington Regiment in World War I in 1915, and saw active service at Gallipoli and in France. Tom Hislop
Tom Hislop (born 7 June 1988) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club and Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by the Essendon Football Club in 2006 at pick 20 in the 2006 AFL draft. He made his debut in Round 14 against and kicked a goal. However, he suffered a stress fracture prior to round 17 and missed the rest of the 2007 season. In 2008, Hislop injured his wrist and missed a few weeks but made his return with the VFL side, Bendigo Bombers in round 6. He returned to the senior team in round 7. Essendon delisted Hislop at the end of the 2008 AFL season. Hislop nominated for the 2008 national draft and was recruited by the Richmond Football Club with pick 58. Hislop was delisted by Richmond in October 2010 after playing fifteen senior games in his two seasons at the club.
