Thomas Higgins (Irish Politician)
Thomas Higgins (27 November 1865 − 26 January 1906) was an Irish nationalist politician, auctioneer and farmer, who as member of the Irish Parliamentary Party was posthumously declared elected Member of Parliament of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1906. Higgins was born in Moylough, the son of Martin Higgins, a shopkeeper, and Catherine Kelly. He was chairman of Tuam Board of Guardians and a member of Galway County Council, was selected as the Irish Parliamentary Party candidate by the United Irish League (UIL) convention on 5 January 1906 to contest the 1906 general election. He had been President of the constituency branch of the UIL since 1900. Taken ill on the night of the election, 25 January 1906, he died as the result of a heart attack in Guy's Hotel, Tuam, at 1.30am the following morning. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia. After his father abandoned the family, he was raised by his grandfather in a poor Gullah community near Savannah. Growing up as a devout Catholic, Thomas originally intended to be a priest in the Catholic Church but was frustrated over the church's insufficient attempts to combat racism. Thomas Higgins (RAF Officer)
Air Commodore Thomas Charles Reginald Higgins, (21 July 1880 – 22 September 1953) was an early British aviator and senior Royal Flying Corps commander during the First World War. He was one of the small number of Royal Flying Corps generals in latter stages of the War. Career Higgins initially served in the Royal Navy, but on 14 March 1900 he joined the British Army and commissioned as a second lieutenant in The King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). He saw active service in the Transvaal, Natal and on the Zululand Frontier during the Second Boer War, and was promoted to lieutenant on 25 July 1900. From 1904 to 1909 Higgins was seconded to overseas service as part of the West African Frontier Force. After his return to Great Britain, Higgins learnt to fly in 1911, gaining Royal Aero Club Certificate No. 88. Thomas Aquinas Higgins (August 15, 1932 – September 11, 2018) was an American jurist who was United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. Education and career He was born in Nashville, Tennessee and attended Father Ryan High School. He received an Associate of Arts degree from Christian Brothers College in 1952 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee in 1954. He received a Bachelor of Laws from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1957. He was in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1957 to 1960, where he attained the rank of first lieutenant. He was in private practice in Nashville from 1961 to 1984. Thomas John Higgins (November 7, 1944 – March 21, 2018) was an American rock climber with many first and first free ascents primarily in the western United States. He was noted for pushing standards using a purist, free climbing style. Early climbs, Tahquitz Rock He began climbing in the early 1960s with partners Bud (later Ivan) Couch and Russ McLean on the sandstone boulders and short cliffs of Stony Point near Los Angeles. He soon teamed up with lifelong climbing partner Bob Kamps. Together they did the 1963 first free ascent of ''Blanketty Blank'' at Tahquitz Rock (5.10c) in Southern California. On this and other routes to follow, they employed ground up climbing without previewing or rehearsing the route or resting on the rope. Thomas Joseph John Higgins Jr. (born July 13, 1954) is the defensive coordinator for the Alberta Golden Bears football team in U Sports. He has previously served as the Director of Officiating for the Canadian Football League and is a former Canadian and American football player, head coach, and general manager. Thomas Francis O'Higgins (23 July 1916 – 25 February 2003) was an Irish Fine Gael politician, barrister and judge who served as Chief Justice of Ireland from 1974 to 1985, a Judge of the European Court of Justice from 1985 to 1991, a Judge of the High Court from 1973 to 1974, Deputy Leader of Fine Gael from 1972 to 1977 and Minister for Health from 1954 to 1957. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1948 to 1969. Part of a new generation of Fine Gael leaders who emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, O'Higgins worked alongside Declan Costello and Garret FitzGerald to liberalise the conservative Fine Gael.
