Thomas Gray (VC)
Thomas Gray, VC (17 May 1914 – 12 May 1940) was a British airman and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. RAF career Gray was 25 years old, and a sergeant in No. 12 Squadron RAF, Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War when the following deed took place for which he and his pilot Flying Officer Donald Garland were awarded the VC in a joint citation. On 12 May 1940, over the Albert Canal, Belgium, one bridge in particular was being used by the invading German army, with protection from fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft and machine-guns. The RAF was ordered to demolish this vital bridge, and five Fairey Battle bombers were despatched with Sergeant Gray as the navigator in the plane leading the bombing attack. Urchfont
Urchfont is a rural village and civil parish in the southwest of the Vale of Pewsey and north of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, about southeast of the market town of Devizes. The hamlet of Cuckoo's Corner is in the northwest of the village; the parish includes the hamlets of Wedhampton () and Lydeway (). The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 1,075. Urchfont village lies mostly to the north of the B3098 road which connects Market Lavington to the A342 Devizes-Upavon road. The parish narrows as it extends southeast onto Salisbury Plain and into the military training area. History There are remains of several bowl barrows on the downland in the south of the parish, and evidence of a late prehistoric or Roman field system on Penning Down. Amifontaine
Amifontaine () is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Amifontaine is located some 20 km southeast of Laon and 40 km northwest of Rheims. The Autoroute des Anglais (A26, E17) passes through the western side of the commune from north to south but has no exit in the commune. Access to the commune is by road D52 from Ramecourt in the northwest through the commune to the village and continuing south-east to Prouvais. There is also road D89 from La Malmaison in the northeast through the village to Juvincourt-et-Damary in the southwest. The D24 road also passes through the north of the commune from west to east forming the southern border of a large forested area extending beyond the northern border of the commune. The commune is almost entirely farmland except for the forested area in the north. Amifontaine station has rail connections to Reims and Laon.
