Captain Thomas Graves
Thomas Graves (c. 1580–1635) was one of the original Adventurers (stockholders) of the Virginia Company of London, and one of the very early Planters (settlers) who founded Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in North America. He was also the first known person named Graves in North America. Captain Thomas Graves is listed as one of the original Adventurers as "Thomas Grave" on page 364, ''Records of the Virginia Company of London'', vol. IV. Graves arrived in Virginia in October 1608 on the ship ''Mary and Margaret'' with Captain Christopher Newport's second supply. He paid 25 pounds for two shares in the London Company and thereby was entitled to . Captain Thomas Graves settled at Smythe's Hundred, situated on the north shore of the James River ten miles from Jamestown. Thomas Graves (November 1662) was an English engineer and city planner responsible for the laying out of the city of Charlestown in Massachusetts Bay Colony, now a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Life Graves was born in Gravesend, Kent, around 1583 or 1585. He signed a contract with the Massachusetts Bay Company in March 1629 and arrived in New England in July 1629. He brought his wife, Sarah Whiting, five children, and two servants. He reportedly arrived with Gov. John Endecott's company on the George Bonaventure, which arrived in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1629. He was one of the founders of Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1645, by which time he also owned property in Hartford, Connecticut Hartford is the capital city of the U.S. state of Connecticut. Thomas Graves or Greaves (1684–June 19, 1747) was an associate justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court of Judicature from 1737 to 1738. Appointed by Governor Jonathan Belcher, he served as a temporary replacement for Edmund Quincy while the latter was in England on other business, and was replaced after Quincy's death by Stephen Sewall. Graves was born in Charlestown and graduated from Harvard College in 1703. His father, also named Thomas, was a magistrate in Middlesex County best known for denouncing the Salem witch trials of 1692. Graves was trained as a medical doctor, but was drawn into legal work with an appointment as a special judge in Middlesex County in 1731. He was eventually appointed to that county's court of common pleas, where he served until his temporary appointment to the provincial high court in 1737. Thomas Ryder Graves (1745–1828) was a clergyman in the Church of Ireland during the 18th century. Admiral Sir Thomas Graves KB (c.1747 – 29 March 1814) was an officer of the Royal Navy who rose to the rank of admiral after service in the Seven Years' War, the American War of Independence, and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Thomas North Graves, 2nd Baron Graves (28 May 1775 – 7 February 1830) was a British peer and Member of Parliament. Graves was the son of Admiral Thomas Graves, 1st Baron Graves. He succeeded his father as second Baron Graves in 1802, but as this was an Irish peerage it did not entitle him to an automatic seat in the House of Lords. He was instead elected to the House of Commons for Okehampton in 1812, a seat he held until 1818, and then represented Windsor from 1819 to 1820 and Milborne Port from 1820 to 1827, when he retired from the Commons to become one of His Majesty's Commissioners of Revenue of Excise. He was also a Lord of the Bedchamber and Comptroller of the Household to His Royal Highness Ernest Augustus, 1st Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia.
