Thomas Francis Roberts
Thomas Francis Roberts (1860–1919) was a Welsh academic and second Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Born at Aberdyfi, he received his education at Tywyn and the UCWA before taking a scholarship to St John's College, Oxford, where he took a first in Classical honour moderations in 1881 and again in ''literae humaniores'' two years later. After receiving his Bachelor's degree in 1883, he became the first Professor of Greek at the newly established Cardiff University, University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire. In 1891 he succeeded Thomas Charles Edwards at his ''alma mater'', University College Wales, Aberystwyth. He was a founder member, with T. E. Ellis, of the Aberystwyth Old Students' Association in 1892 and was later President in 1910–11. To date, he is both the youngest-appointed and longest-serving Principal. Aberystwyth Old Students' Association ( cy, Cymdeithas y Cyn-Fyfyrwyr Aberystwyth), founded in 1892, is Aberystwyth University's alumni association and is one of the oldest such associations in the United Kingdom. It currently has more than 9,500 Members and 83,000 Associate Members worldwide. History It was founded on 2 March 1892, by a group of former students in Aberystwyth to mark St David's Day. John Humphreys Davies
John Humphreys Davies (15 April 1871 – 10 August 1926) was a Welsh lawyer, bibliographer and educator. He joined the movement to start a National Library of Wales. Family and schooling Born at Llangeitho, Ceredigion, he was the son of Robert J. Davies, Cwrtmawr. He was educated at the Aberystywth University, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and Lincoln College, Oxford, before being called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn. Welsh literature Davies's interest in Welsh literature is associated with O. M. Edwards at Oxford University, Oxford and to his brother-in-law, T. E. Ellis. Thomas Charles Edwards (22 September 183722 March 1900) was a Welsh minister, writer and academic who was the first Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Life Thomas Charles Edwards was born at Llanycil, Bala, Merionethshire, on 22 September 1837. Edwards was the son of Lewis Edwards, founder of the Bala Theological College. His mother was a granddaughter of Thomas Charles, the organiser of Welsh Calvinistic Methodism. He was educated at his father's college in Bala, at St Alban Hall, Oxford and at Lincoln College, Oxford. At Oxford he was deeply influenced by Mark Pattison and Benjamin Jowett, and kept in touch with them for the rest of their lives. He began preaching with the Presbyterian Church of Wales in 1856, and his resolve to become a minister was deepened by the revival of 1858–1859.
