Thomas Francis McAllister
Thomas Francis McAllister (March 4, 1896 – November 10, 1976) was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Education and career Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, McAllister was a volunteer in the French Foreign Legion from 1917 to 1918. He received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1918 and read law to enter the bar in 1921. He was in private practice in Grand Rapids from 1921 to 1937. He was a member of the Michigan State Advisory Liquor Commission in 1933. He was a Democratic candidate for the United States House of Representatives from Michigan in 1934 and 1936. He was a special assistant to the United States attorney general for the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice in 1937. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. The Emergency Court of Appeals was a temporary federal court established by the United States during World War II, whose purpose was to review wage- and price-control matters.
