Thomas Fitch Rowland Prize
The Thomas Fitch Rowland Prize is awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). It was started in 1882, and is named for Thomas Fitch Rowland, who endowed it in 1884. An author who belongs to the ASCE can be nominated if they have published a print article in an ASCE journal in the last twelve months. The New York Railways Company operated street railways in Manhattan, New York City, United States between 1911 and 1925. The company went into receivership in 1919 and control was passed to the New York Railways Corporation in 1925 after which all of its remaining lines were replaced with bus routes. Karl von Terzaghi (October 2, 1883 – October 25, 1963) was an Austrians, Austrian Mechanical Engineer, mechanical engineer, geotechnical engineer, and geologist known as the "father of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering". Early life In 1883, he was born the first child of Army Lieutenant-Colonel Anton von Terzaghi, of Italian origin, and Amalia Eberle in Prague, in what is now the Czech Republic. Upon his father's retirement from the army, the family moved to Graz, Austria. At 10, Terzaghi was sent to a military boarding school, where he developed an interest in astronomy and geography. Frank William Peek Jr. (August 20, 1881, Mokelumne Hill, California – July 27, 1933, near Gaspé, Quebec) was an American electrical engineer and inventor, known as a pioneer in engineering research on the creation of extremely high voltage electricity. He is often given the sobriquet "inventor of man-made lightning". He is known for Peek's law. Biography Peek graduated in 1905 with a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and in 1911 with a master's degree in electrical engineering from Schenectady's Union College. He then became a consulting and research engineer for General Electric (GE) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. In June 1931 Harris J.
