Thomas Boehm (biologist)
Thomas Boehm (born 21 July 1956 in Gelnhausen) is a German immunologist. He is the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg im Breisgau. He has won a variety of prizes for his research work. Life Boehm completed his medical studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. He received his doctorate in 1982 and then worked as a research assistant in paediatrics and biochemistry at Frankfurt University Hospital. In 1988 he qualified as a professor of biochemistry. From 1987 to 1991 he was a visiting researcher and then a research associate at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Cambridge University. In 1991 he received a professorship at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg and in 1994 a joint professorship at Heidelberg University and the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. Lymphocytes
A lymphocyte is a type of white blood cell (leukocyte) in the immune system of most vertebrates. Lymphocytes include natural killer cells (which function in cell-mediated, cytotoxic innate immunity), T cells (for cell-mediated, cytotoxic adaptive immunity), and B cells (for humoral, antibody-driven adaptive immunity). They are the main type of cell found in lymph, which prompted the name "lymphocyte". Lymphocytes make up between 18% and 42% of circulating white blood cells. Types The three major types of lymphocyte are T cells, B cells and natural killer (NK) cells. Lymphocytes can be identified by their large nucleus. In immunology, an antigen (Ag) is a molecule or molecular structure or any foreign particulate matter or a pollen grain that can bind to a specific antibody or T-cell receptor. Immune tolerance, or immunological tolerance, or immunotolerance, is a state of unresponsiveness of the immune system to substances or tissue that would otherwise have the capacity to elicit an immune response in a given organism.
