Thomas Atkinson (architect)
Thomas Atkinson (1729–1798) was an English architect, best remembered for remodelling Bishopthorpe Palace in the Gothic Revival style. Life Atkinson was born at York, the son of Thomas and Jane Marshall Atkinson. His father was a mason. He worked with his father and later developed an architectural practice based in York. The house that he built there for himself in about 1780 still stands at 20 St Andrewgate in the city centre. He was the leading Yorkshire-based architect of the second half of the 18th century. Atkinson converted to Roman Catholicism; he received a number of commissions from the Yorkshire Catholic gentry. He was commissioned to design a new chapel for Bar Convent. The dome was concealed beneath a slate roof, so that it was hidden from view. Atkinson also built eight different escape routes into the Chapel, to ensure that if the building was stormed, the worshippers would be able to escape. Thomas Witlam Atkinson
Thomas Witlam Atkinson (1799–1861) was an English architect, artist and traveller in Siberia and Central Asia. Between 1847 and 1853 he travelled over 40 000 miles through Central Asia and Siberia, much of the time together with his wife Lucy and son Alatau, who was born during their travels. He also painted and documented his travels in two books that are today regarded as travel classics. His and Lucy's son, Alatau Tamchiboulac Atkinson, born on 4 November 1848 in what is now Eastern Kazakhstan, was named after the famous Tamshybulak Spring in the town of Qapal at the foot of the Djungar Alatau mountains. Life He was born in Cawthorne, near Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire in 1799. Thomas Atkinson (August 6, 1807 – January 4, 1881) was the third Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina. Early life Atkinson was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, the son of Robert Atkinson and Mary Tabb Mayo Atkinson. He attended Yale University and Hampden-Sydney College, graduating from the latter in 1825.. Upon graduation, he studied law under Judge Henry St. George Tucker at Winchester Law School and practiced law for eight years before turning to theology. In January 1828, he married Josepha Gwinn Wilder, with whom he had three children. Parish ministry Atkinson was ordained deacon by the Rt. Rev. William Meade on November 18, 1836, and ordained priest the following year. As deacon, Atkinson served as assistant minister at Christ Church in Norfolk, Virginia. Thomas Atkinson (born about 1546, died 11 March 1616) was an English Roman Catholic priest. He is a Catholic martyr, beatified in 1987. Life He was born in the East Riding of Yorkshire, was ordained priest at Reims, and returned to England in 1588. He was well known, especially for visiting poor Catholics, and eventually he could not safely travel by day. He always travelled by foot until, having broken his leg, he had to ride a horse. At the age of 70 he was betrayed and taken to York with his host, Mr. Vavasour of Willitoft, and some members of the family. Thomas Atkinson was a warrant officer in the Royal Navy who served as master under Nelson and became one of the admiral's favoured followers. Nelson clearly thought highly of Atkinson, describing him as "One of the best Masters I have seen in the Royal Navy". Early career and promotion to master Born in Yorkshire in 1767, Atkinson joined the Royal Navy as a volunteer in 1793. Virtually nothing is known of him before this date but as he was immediately rated as an able seaman it is almost certain that he was already an experienced mariner. Thomas Atkinson (1801–1833) was a Scottish poet and miscellaneous writer. Life Atkinson was a native of Glasgow, where he carried on business as a bookseller. He followed in the shoes of his father, also Thomas Atkinson. He was apprenticed to Brash & Reid, booksellers, and continued for a time there. From 1823 to 1830 Atkinson was in partnership with David Robertson, having taken over the business of William Turnbull on his death. Later he ran a bookshop at 80 Trongate under the name of Atkinson & Co. After the passing of the Reform Bill, Atkins became a candidate in the liberal interest for the representation of the in parliament, but was unsuccessful, losing to Archibald Primrose, Lord Dalmeny. Thomas Robert Atkinson (August 24, 1854 – December 11, 1921) was a lawyer and politician in Ontario, Canada. He represented Norfolk North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1905 to 1908 and from 1911 to 1919 as a Liberal. The son of Thomas Atkinson and Mary Ballantine, he was born in Ancaster township and was educated in Simcoe, at Queen's University and at Osgoode Hall Law School. In 1879, he married Alice Steele. Atkinson served as mayor of Simcoe from 1895 to 1896.
