Thomas Atkins (born c. 1538) was an English mercer and holder of public offices during the reign of Elizabeth I. He was the eldest son of John Atkins of Ashleworth, Gloucestershire and educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he was awarded BA in 1554. He studied law at the Middle Temple (1558). Thomas Atkins (Lord Mayor)
Thomas Atkins was Lord Mayor of London and an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1640 and from 1647 to 1653 and was Lord Mayor of London in 1644. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War. Biography Atkins was the son of John Atkins of King's Lynn, Norfolk. He was an alderman of Norwich, and then an alderman of the City of London for Bridge Without, from Lime Street. He was Sheriff of London in 1637, and colonel of the Red Regiment, London Trained Bands, in 1642. In April 1640, Atkins was elected member of parliament for Norwich in the Short Parliament. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London in May 1640 with three other aldermen – Nicholas Rainton, Thomas Soame and John Gayre – for refusing to list the inhabitants of his ward who were able to contribute £50 or more to a loan for King Charles. Tommy Atkins (July 18, 1887 –June 18, 1968) was an American director of the silent and early sound film eras. Born on July 18, 1887, in Springfield, Massachusetts, he made his entrance into the film industry as the assistant director to Ralph Ince on the 1920 silent film ''Out of the Snows''. Eight years later, he made another film, again as assistant director, for FBO Pictures on another silent film, ''Crooks Can't Win''. He worked as the assistant director on another sixteen films between 1928 and 1934, the most notable of which was 1933's ''Morning Glory'', directed by Lowell Sherman and starring Katharine Hepburn and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. In 1934 he directed his first picture, ''The Silver Streak'', which was one of the top money-makers for RKO Pictures that year. Tom Atkins (born 18 September 1995) is an Australian rules footballer playing for in the Australian Football League (AFL). An inside midfielder with goalkicking ability, he spent his early career with Geelong's Victorian Football League (VFL) affiliate. After being overlooked in two AFL drafts, he was selected by Geelong with pick 11 in the 2019 rookie draft and made his debut in the opening round of the 2019 season. Early career Atkins began playing in the VFL with Geelong in 2014. He spent his first year on the club's development list before playing VFL matches under the 23rd-player rule (which permitted teams to be expanded to allow players recently listed with a TAC Cup club to play with its VFL affiliate). It was certainly well established during the nineteenth century, but is particularly associated with the First World War. It can be used as a term of reference, or as a form of address. German soldiers would call out to "Tommy" across no man's land if they wished to speak to a British soldier. French and Commonwealth troops would also call British soldiers "Tommies". In more recent times, the term Tommy Atkins has been used less frequently, although the name "Tom" is occasionally still heard; private soldiers in the British Army's Parachute Regiment are still referred to as "Toms". The 'Tommy Atkins' mango is a named mango cultivar. Although generally not considered to be the best in terms of sweetness and flavor, it is valued for its very long shelf life and tolerance of handling and transportation with little or no bruising or degradation. This means it is the main mango sold in regions where mangoes have to be imported, comprising about 80% of mangoes sold in the United Kingdom and United States, apart from growing regions in California, Hawaii, Florida and Jamaica. However, in France it is sold at a discount, while the main imported cultivar is Kent, considered less fibrous and tastier.
