Thomas A. Curran
Thomas A. Curran (May 29, 1879 – January 24, 1941), was an Australian-born American actor on the stage and in motion pictures. Between 1915 and 1941 he appeared in 60 films, the last of which was '' Citizen Kane'', in which he played the uncredited role of Theodore Roosevelt in the "News on the March" newsreel sequence. Biography Thomas A. Curran was born on May 29, 1879, in Sydney, Australia. He studied acting in the United States, where he made his stage debut in 1897. After returning to Australia for a few years, he returned to the U.S. in 1912 or 1913 and worked in vaudeville and repertory theatre. He acted in the original productions of ''Excuse Me'' written by Rupert Hughes (later adapted twice for the screen) and '' Oh! Oh! Delphine''. Based on the 1927 novel ''Amy Jolly'' (the on-screen credits state: from the play 'Amy Jolly') by Benno Vigny and adapted by Jules Furthman, the film is about a cabaret singer and a Legionnaire who fall in love during the Rif War, and whose relationship is complicated by his womanizing and the appearance of a rich man who is also in love with her. ''The Black Pearl'' is a 1928 American silent mystery film directed by Scott Pembroke and starring Lila Lee, Ray Hallor and Carl Stockdale. It is based on a 1912 novel titled ''The Black Pearl'' by Nancy Mann Waddel Woodrow, with a plot very similar to that of Wilkie Collins' 1868 novel ''The Moonstone''. Both novels involved a mystery around a jewel stolen from an Indian idol that carries a horrible curse. Reviews from the time suggest this "old dark house" mystery had less humor and more suspense than most, but the film is today considered lost, so it all remains conjecture.
