This One's For Tedi
''This One's for Tedi'' is a studio album by American jazz vocalist Johnny Hartman, released in 1985 by Audiophile Records. It was his final studio recording, made in August 1980, three years before his death. The album is dedicated to Hartman's wife Theodora (Tedi). According to producer George H. Buck Jr., ''This One's for Tedi'' "was the first ''digital'' recording to be made in Canada." Reception Reception for ''This One's for Tedi'' has been mostly favorable. The album "finds the 56-year-old singer still in prime form," writes Scott Yanow at AllMusic. "Hartman is as warm as usual on ballads, and also swings lightly on a few medium-tempo pieces." Andrew Sussman, critic at ''Fanfare'', called the album "the most satisfying I have heard from him since his landmark LP with John Coltrane. . . . Johnny Hartman
John Maurice Hartman (July 3, 1923 – September 15, 1983) was an American jazz singer who specialized in ballads. He sang and recorded with Earl Hines' and Dizzy Gillespie's big bands and with Erroll Garner. Hartman is best remembered for his collaboration in 1963 with saxophonist John Coltrane, ''John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman'', a landmark album for both him and Coltrane. Biography Born in Louisiana and raised in Chicago, Hartman began singing and playing the piano by the age of eight. He attended DuSable High School studying music under Walter Dyett before receiving a scholarship to the Chicago Musical College. John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (; October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. He was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuosic style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading popularizer of the new music called bebop. Lorenz Hart
Lorenz Milton Hart (May 2, 1895 – November 22, 1943) was an American lyricist and half of the Broadway songwriting team Rodgers and Hart. Some of his more famous lyrics include "Blue Moon", " The Lady Is a Tramp", "Manhattan", " Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", and " My Funny Valentine". Life and career Hart was born in Harlem, New York City, the elder of two sons, to Jewish immigrant parents, Max M. and Frieda (Isenberg) Hart, of German background. Through his mother, he was a great-grandnephew of the German poet Heinrich Heine. His father, a business promoter, sent Hart and his brother to private schools. (His brother, Teddy Hart, also went into theatre and became a musical comedy star. Teddy Hart's wife, Dorothy Hart, wrote a biography of Lorenz Hart.) "More I Cannot Wish You" is a song written and composed by Frank Loesser and first performed by Pat Rooney, Sr. in 1950. The song was featured in the musical ''Guys and Dolls''. The sentimental lyrics relate the feelings of the oldest character in the play, missionary Arvide Abernathy, who sings it tenderly to his granddaughter, Sarah Brown. Development Loesser originally wrote the song for the 1949 movie ''Roseanna McCoy''. Ira Gershwin (born Israel Gershovitz; December 6, 1896 – August 17, 1983) was an American lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable songs in the English language of the 20th century. "That's All" is a 1952 song written by Alan Brandt with music by Bob Haymes. It has been covered by many jazz and blues artists. The first recording, by Nat King Cole in 1953, achieved some popularity but was not among that year's top 20 songs. It was Bobby Darin's version from his 1959 album of the same title that introduced the song to a wider audience, and it has since become a jazz standard.
