''This Is the Place for a Song'' or ''This Is the Place for a Song: A Melbourne Celebration of World Music'' is a compilation album by various Australian artists, released in May 2005. It consists of 14 cover versions of Melbourne-associated tracks in different styles, with some in different languages. The album was organised by Paul Stewart and Gil Santos (from the Dili Allstars) and it was created to raise awareness of Melbourne's Immigration Museum and was sponsored by the Victorian Multicultural Commission with a grant of $10,000. The Dili Allstars are an Australian and East Timorese reggae/ska band based in Melbourne. They are one of the leading voices of support for the East Timorese people and a popular musical group. The band has released two albums; a special edition Portuguese tour CD; an EP titled ''Increase the Peace''; and also tracks for the ARIA Award-winning ''Balibo'' soundtrack album, and the Australian Canadian telemovie ''Answered By Fire''. Australian Crawl
Australian Crawl (often called Aussie Crawl or The Crawl by fans) were an Australian rock band founded by James Reyne (lead vocals/piano/harmonica), Brad Robinson (rhythm guitar), Paul Williams (bass), Simon Binks (lead guitar) and David Reyne (drums) in Melbourne in 1978. David Reyne soon left and was replaced by Bill McDonough (drums, percussion). They were later joined by his brother Guy McDonough (vocals, rhythm guitar). The band was named after the front crawl swimming style also known as the Australian crawl. Australian Crawl were associated with surf music and sponsored a surfing competition in 1984. However, they also handled broader social issues such as shallow materialism, alcoholism, car accidents, and cautionary tales of romance. James Reyne
James Michael Nugent Reyne OAM (born 19 May 1957) is an Australian rock musician and singer-songwriter both in solo work and, until 1986, with the band Australian Crawl. Biography Early years Reyne was born in Lagos, Nigeria. His father, Rodney Michael Reyne, was an English-born former Royal Marine, who served as aide-de-camp to the Governor of the state of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks, and subsequently worked for British Petroleum. His paternal grandfather, Cecil Nugent Reyne, was an English rear admiral. His mother, Judith Graham, née Leask, was a teacher. His younger brother, David Reyne, was also born in Nigeria. The family moved to Victoria in late 1959, where a younger sister Elisabeth was born. Mach Pelican
Mach Pelican were a punk rock band of Japanese origin formed in Perth, Australia in 1996. In 1998, they relocated to Melbourne, Australia. They announced their farewell tour in July 2007, and played their final show in Tokyo, Japan on 17 September 2007. Biography The band was formed by three Japanese students who were studying English in Perth in 1996. After touring extensively, Mach Pelican moved to Melbourne in 1998. "Beautiful People" is the 1979 debut single released by Australian rock band Australian Crawl and the song later appeared on their debut album ''The Boys Light Up'' (1980). It was written by James Reyne and Mark Hudson, former bandmates. The music video for "Beautiful People" was filmed in 1979 at the then dilapidated and graffitied (but now renovated and heritage listed) Bellevue House, Glebe. Paul Maurice Kelly (born 13 January 1955) is an Australian rock music singer-songwriter and guitarist. He has performed solo, and has led numerous groups, including the Dots, the Coloured Girls, and the Messengers. Kev Carmody
Kevin Daniel Carmody (born 1946), better known by his stage name Kev Carmody, is an Aboriginal Australian singer-songwriter and musician, a Murri man from northern Queensland. He is best known for the song "From Little Things Big Things Grow", which was recorded with co-writer Paul Kelly for their 1993 single. It was covered by the Get Up Mob (including guest vocals by both Carmody and Kelly) in 2008 and peaked at number four on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) singles charts. "From Little Things Big Things Grow" is a protest song recorded by Australian artists Paul Kelly & The Messengers on their 1991 album ''Comedy'', and by Kev Carmody (with Kelly) on his 1993 album ''Bloodlines''. It was released as a CD single by Carmody and Kelly in 1993 but failed to chart. The song was co-written by Kelly and Carmody, and is based on the story of the Gurindji strike (Wave Hill walk-off) and Vincent Lingiari as part of the Indigenous people's struggle for land rights in Australia and reconciliation. At the 1994 Country Music Awards of Australia, the song won Heritage Song of the Year.
