Thiruvambadi Sivasundar
Thiruvambadi Sivasundar ( 1964 — 11 March 2018) was an Indian elephant who lived at the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple in Thrissur, Kerala, India. Career He was first named Pookkodan Sivan and once worked at a timber factory. In 2003, he was purchased by businessman Sundar Menon for ₹28 lakh. Menon then gave him as an offering to the deity at the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple. From then on, he carried the idol on behalf of the temple during Thrissur's annual Pooram festival. Death He died at 1:30 am, on 11 March 2018. He was experiencing constipation and losing weight for the last 67 days of his life, during which time he was receiving treatment. Thousands of people attended his funeral. It was then taken to Malayattoor in Kerala where he was cremated and his ashes buried. Indian Elephant
The Indian elephant (''Elephas maximus indicus'') is one of four extant recognised subspecies of the Asian elephant and native to mainland Asia. Since 1986, the Asian elephant has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List as the wild population has declined by at least 50% since the 1930s to 1940s, i.e. three elephant generations. The Asian elephant is threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation. Characteristics In general, Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants and have the highest body point on the head. The tip of their trunk has one finger-like process. Thrissur
Thrissur (), formerly Trichur, also known by its historical name Thrissivaperur, is a city and the headquarters of the Thrissur district in Kerala, India. Thiruvambady is a major hill town and a suburb in southeastern Kozhikode district in Kerala, India. Thiruvambady is a Panchayat headquarters, and a legislative assembly constituency, situated from the district headquarters of Kozhikode. Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple
Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple is a Hindu temple in the city of Thrissur in Kerala, India. The main deities of this temple are Krishna in the form of a child, and Bhadrakali, both having equal importance. There are sub-shrines for Ganesha, Sastha and Brahmarakshas, and there is a sub-temple for Ganesha behind the temple. The temple is one of the two rival groups participating in the Thrissur Pooram. Sundar Menon (born 1962) is a GCC-based Indian entrepreneur, and the founder of The Sun Group International. Early life and education Sundar Menon was born in 1962. He graduated in Economics, and further completed an MBA. The European Continental University (EUC-USA) awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate in 2015 for his contributions towards the economic development of the GCC. Pooram
Pooram pronounced is an annual festival, which is celebrated in temples dedicated to goddesses Durga or Kali held especially in Valluvanadu area and other adjoining parts of north-central Kerala (Present Palakkad, Thrissur, Kannur, Kasaragod and Malappuram districts) after the summer harvest. Harimattom pooram is the one of the famous pooram in Ernakulam. An example of a famous pooram is Thirumandhamkunnu Pooram which has an active participation of 11 Lakh people across the country. Most pooram festivals have at least one ornately decorated elephant being paraded in the procession taken out of the temple precincts. Elephants In Indian Culture
Elephants are the largest existing land animals. Three living species are currently recognised: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant. They are the only surviving members of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. The order was formerly much more diverse during the Pleistocene, but most species became extinct during the Late Pleistocene epoch. Distinctive features of elephants include a long proboscis called a trunk, tusks, large ear flaps, pillar-like legs, and tough but sensitive skin. The trunk is used for breathing, bringing food and water to the mouth, and grasping objects. Tusks, which are derived from the incisor teeth, serve both as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging.
