Thingy (band)
Thingy is an American indie rock band formed after the dissolution of Heavy Vegetable in 1995, by Heavy Vegetable veterans Rob Crow and Eléa Tenuta. Crow, Tenuta, and bassist Jason Soares released a seven-song EP, ''Staring Contest'', in 1996 on the old Heavy Vegetable label Headhunter/Cargo. They were joined by drummer Mario Rubalcaba Mario Rubalcaba (also known by the pseudonym Ruby Mars) is an American drummer from San Diego, notable as a member of numerous rock bands including Clikatat Ikatowi, Thingy, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Earthless, the Sultans, and Off! H ... in 1997, with whom they released the album, ''Songs About Angels, Evil, and Running Around on Fire''. The same lineup released ''To the Innocent'' in 2000, but Rubalcaba and Soares left the quartet and were replaced by Brent Asbury and Kenseth Thibideau, respectively. Heavy Vegetable
Heavy Vegetable was a Rock music, rock band based in Encinitas, California, which featured guitarist and lead singer Rob Crow, singer Eléa Tenuta, bassist Travis Nelson and drummer Manolo Turner. 11 years after their final studio album released, Rob Crow, Crow, Nelson, and Turner reunited as Other Men and produced the album "Wake Up Swimming" which released in 2007. Pinback
Pinback is an American indie rock band from San Diego, California. The band was formed in 1998 by singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow, who have been its two consistent members. They have released five studio albums and several other releases. History and origin The band's moniker is a reference to a character in the 1974 film '' Dark Star'' (played by Dan O'Bannon, who also co-wrote the film), directed by John Carpenter. Audio samples from this film are used frequently in the band's early works. In 2004, Pinback signed to Touch and Go Records. They released their third album, ''Summer in Abaddon'', later that year. In 2006, the band released a collection of rarities, entitled ''Nautical Antiques''. Pinback's fourth full-length album, ''Autumn of the Seraphs'', was released on September 11, 2007. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Robertdale Rulon Crow Jr. (born February 21, 1971) is an American singer and musician from San Diego, California, known for his involvement with the bands Pinback, Heavy Vegetable, Physics, Optiganally Yours and Thingy. He has also led the bands Advertising, Alpha Males, Altron Tube, Byre, Cthugha, Fantasy Mission Force, Goblin Cock, Holy Smokes, the Ladies, Other Men, and Remote Action Sequence Project, as well as performing and releasing solo records under his own name and under the name Snotnose. Mario Rubalcaba
Mario Rubalcaba (also known by the pseudonym Ruby Mars) is an American drummer from San Diego, notable as a member of numerous rock bands including Clikatat Ikatowi, Thingy, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Earthless, the Sultans, and Off! He has also played on albums by The Black Heart Procession and Pinback and was formerly a professional skateboarder. Skateboarding career In the late 1980s and early 1990s Rubalcaba was a professional skateboarder, skating for Team Alva. Though he no longer skates professionally, he does work at Black Box, a skateboarding distribution company and skate park in San Diego. Musical career Rubalcaba's drumming career began in 1990 with the San Diego post-hardcore band 411. The group released the single ''Say It'' in 1990 and the album ''This Isn't Me'' in 1991 before disbanding. Joyful Noise Recordings
Joyful Noise Recordings is an independent record label from Indianapolis, Indiana. The label was founded in 2003 in Bloomington, Indiana by Karl Hofstetter, who also played drums on many of the label's first releases. Joyful Noise maintains an active roster of over 30 bands playing various musical styles, though according to the label, each artist "in one way or another bridges the gap between pop and noise." History In 2010 Joyful Noise began focusing largely on limited edition specialty releases which are generally released on analog formats packaged with music downloads.
