Thilmeeza Hussain
Thilmeeza Hussain ( dv, ތިލްމީޛާ ޙުސައިން, born 22 March 1978) is a Maldivian civil servant and diplomat who has served as Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations and Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States and Canada since May 2019. Hussain holds an Master of Science in Business Management from Colorado Technical University. In December, she was appointed as State Minister for Home Affairs for the North Province by President Mohamed Nasheed. In November 2009, she was appointed Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, serving until March 2012. Hussain was appointed by President Ibrahim Solih to serve as the next ambassador to the UN in 2018, succeeding Ali Naseer Mohamed. The appointment was confirmed by the Parliament of the Maldives in December. She presented her credentials as ambassador to Sean Lawler, Chief of Protocol of the Department of State, on 7 May 2019. It is customary that the Permanent Representative also be dually accredited as Ambassador to the United States of America. The People's Majlis ( dv, ރައްޔިތުންގެ މަޖިލިސް; ''Rayyithunge Majilis'') is the unicameral legislative body of Maldives. The Majlis has the authority to enact, amend and revise laws, as outlined in the Constitution of the Maldives. The Majlis is composed of 87 members as of 2019. Each year on the last Thursday of February, the Majlis is opened by the President of the Maldives. During the opening ceremony, the president outlines his policies and achievements in his presidential term. The annual budget of the state is also passed by the Majlis. The working language of the Majlis is Dhivehi. History A council was set up by Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen III to draft the constitution of the Maldives on 9 March 1931. Ali Naseer Mohamed ( dv, ޢަލީ ނަޞީރު މުޙައްމަދު, born 2 November 1969) is a Maldivian diplomat who was Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations and Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States and Canada from July 2017 to May 2019. Mohamed Nasheed GCSK (; born 17 May 1967) is a Maldivian politician and activist currently serving as the 19th speaker of the People's Majlis since May 2019. A founding member of the Maldivian Democratic Party, he served as President of the Maldives from 2008 until his resignation in 2012. He is the first democratically elected president of the Maldives and the only president to resign from office. Born in Malé, Nasheed was educated overseas before returning to the Maldives and becoming involved in political activism.
