The Thief River Falls Norskies are an American Junior A ice hockey team based in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. They participate in the Superior International Junior Hockey League, a Canadian Junior Hockey League member. History The Norskies were established in 2016 through the efforts of local investors, including former National Hockey League player Tim Bergland. The team's name, "Norskies," was selected through a contest in nearby elementary schools. The ownership group chose this name as it pays homage to the Norwegian heritage in northwestern Minnesota. Thief River Falls, sometimes referred to as Thief River or abbreviated as TRF, is a city in Pennington County in the northwest portion of the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 8,749 at the 2020 census. Thief River Falls is the county seat for Pennington County. Ralph Engelstad Arena (REA), commonly called the Ralph, is an indoor arena located on the campus of the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks, North Dakota and serves as the home of UND men's ice hockey. The arena was built by controversial UND alumnus Ralph Engelstad. The North Dakota Fighting Hawks men's hockey team is the tenant. The Red Lake Miners are a Canadian junior 'A' ice hockey team based in Red Lake, Ontario. The Miners play in Hockey Canada's Superior International Junior Hockey League. History In May 2013, the SIJHL announced that the Ear Falls Eagles would be joining the league for the 2013–14 season. Weeks later, it was announced that the team would instead be called the English River Miners to better represent the entire community. On September 20, 2013, the Miners played the first game in their franchise's history in Dryden, Ontario, against the Dryden Ice Dogs. The Minnesota Iron Rangers were an American junior ice hockey team based in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Originally named Iron Range Ironheads, the Iron Rangers played in the Canadian-based Superior International Junior Hockey League. Iron Range Ironheads (2011–2012) On July 12, 2011, USA Hockey granted the Superior International Junior Hockey League an expansion team in Chisholm, Minnesota, in the Iron Range region of northern Minnesota to begin play in September 2011. The Thunder Bay North Stars are a Junior ice hockey#Junior A, junior A ice hockey team from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. They are a member of the Superior International Junior Hockey League. History After the fall of the Thunder Bay Flyers in 2001, the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) was founded. Ralph Engelstad Arena (The Mini Ralph) (REA) is an indoor arena located in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. It is used primarily for ice sports, such as hockey, and was built by Jim Kobetsky of Schoen Associates based in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Tim Bergland
Timothy Daniel Bergland (born January 11, 1965) is an American former professional ice hockey player. Playing career Born in Crookston, Minnesota, and raised in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Bergland was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, he did not make it onto the Capitals' roster until the 1989–90 season when his defensive play helped guide the Capitals to their first-ever semifinals appearance. Left exposed in the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft, Bergland was claimed by the Tampa Bay Lightning. He would have a second tour with the Capitals, albeit briefly, when he was claimed on waivers during the 1993–94 season.
