The Thibodaux Giants were a minor league baseball team based in Thibodaux, Louisiana, United States that played in the Evangeline League from 1946 to 1953. They were affiliated with the Atlanta Crackers in 1953. Over the course of their existence, they appeared in the playoffs six times, winning the league championship in 1953 under manager William Adams. Thibodaux ( ) is a city in, and the parish seat of, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States, along the banks of Bayou Lafourche in the northwestern part of the parish. The population was 15,948 at the 2020 census. Thibodaux is a principal city of the Houma– Bayou Cane–Thibodaux metropolitan statistical area. Thibodaux is nicknamed the "Queen City of Lafourche." History The first documented Native American inhabitants of the Thibodaux area were the Chawasha, a small tribe related to the Chitimacha of the upper Bayou Lafourche. The first settlers of European descent in this area arrived in the 18th century, when Louisiana was the Spanish province of Luisiana. The Evangeline League began in 1934 in baseball, 1934 as a six–team Class D (baseball), Class D level minor league baseball, minor league with teams based in Louisiana, United States, later adding Mississippi and Texas based franchises. In 1935, the league was expanded to eight teams and ceased operations in 1942, with six teams, during World War II. It resumed activities in 1946, getting promoted to Class C (baseball), Class C in 1949, and lasted through 1957. The Alexandria Aces were the only team that played in all 21 regular seasons. The Crackers were Atlanta's home team until the Atlanta Braves moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1966. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel, set during the time of the Expulsion of the Acadians.
