EMF (band)
EMF are an English alternative rock band from Cinderford, Gloucestershire, who came to prominence at the beginning of the 1990s. During their initial eight-year run, from 1989 to 1997, the band released three studio albums before a hiatus. Their first single, " Unbelievable", reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and was a number 1 hit on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart. Their debut album, ''Schubert Dip'', went to number 3 on the UK Albums Chart. In April 2022, EMF released their first album of new material in 27 years, ''Go Go Sapiens''. Band name The name EMF is an initialism of Epsom Mad Funkers, a name taken from a fan club of the band New Order in 1989. The song "Head the Ball", which featured on the remix single release of "Lies", featured the repeating lines "electromotive force" and "ecstasy mother fucker". ''Stigma'' is the second studio album by English alternative band EMF, released in 1992. It yielded two UK hit singles: "They’re Here" (no. 29) and "It’s You" (no. 23). The follow-up to the commercially successful '' Schubert Dip'', ''Stigma'' failed to make the UK top 10 Album Charts (peaking at no. 19), and perhaps worse, was only in the charts for two weeks (its predecessor reached no. 3 and charted for 19 weeks). "It's You That Leaves Me Dry" was re-mixed and re-titled "It's You" for the single release. Reception Geoff Orens of AllMusic gave the album three-and-a-half stars out of five, feeling that the overall mood and lyrical themes of the album were different from what would have been expected by fans: "For a fan base ready for more ' Unbelievable's however, ''Stigma'' was far from enticing and unfortunately sold less than hoped, leading to EMF's less-than-grand return to the foray of pop on '' Cha Cha Cha''." EMI Records (formerly EMI Records Ltd.) is a multinational record label owned by Universal Music Group. Ian Alec Harvey Dench (born 7 August 1964) is an English songwriter and musician. He was the guitarist and principal songwriter for EMF, who scored a major international hit reaching number 1 in the United States with " Unbelievable" in 1991. It was voted one of BBC Radio 2's 'Greatest Guitar Riffs'. Early life Ian Alec Harvey Dench was born in Cheltenham, on 7 August 1964, to Harold and Jackie Dench. He has two siblings, Alan and Paul. Dench’s father, Harold Dench, taught Ian classical guitar. Ian attended The Crypt School in Gloucester from 1975, where one year at Prizegiving, his chosen prize of "100 Greatest Rock Licks" was somewhat frowned upon, compared to the preferred academic tomes of others.
