Theresa Merritt
Theresa Merritt Hines (September 24, 1922 June 12, 1998), known professionally as Theresa Merritt, was an American actress and singer. She's known for her role in ''That's My Mama'' (1974-1975) and for her film roles in ''The Wiz'' (1978) and ''Billy Madison'' (1995). Career Born in Emporia, Virginia, Merritt appeared in many theatrical productions but gained fame later in life when she starred as Ma Rainey in ''Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'', for which she earned a Tony Award nomination, and ''The Wiz'', in which she replaced Mabel King as Evillene. She left ''The Wiz'', citing the role's harmful effect on her voice. She then starred in the television sitcom ''That's My Mama''. ''Tambourines to Glory'' is a gospel play with music by Langston Hughes and Jobe Huntley which tells the story of two female street preachers who open a storefront church in Harlem. The play premiered on Broadway in 1963. Background Hughes began writing ''Tambourines to Glory: A Play with Songs'' in July 1956, and later that year turned it into a novel, which was published by John Day in 1958. Production The play opened on Broadway at the Little Theatre November 2, 1963 and closed on November 23, 1963. Aunt Em is a fictional character from the Oz books. Jack Snow, ''Who's Who in Oz'', Chicago, Reilly & Lee, 1954; New York, Peter Bedrick Books, 1988; p. 10. She is the aunt of Dorothy Gale and wife of Uncle Henry, and lives together with them on a farm in Kansas. In ''The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'', she is described as having been a "young, pretty wife" when she arrived at Uncle Henry's farm, but having been " grayed" by her life there, implying that she appears older than her years.
