Theophilus Fortescue
Theophilus Fortescue (1707–1746), of Castle Hill, Filleigh, near Barnstaple, Devon, was a British Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1746. Fortescue was the third son of Hugh Fortescue, MP of Filleigh and his first wife Bridget Boscawen, daughter of Hugh Boscawen of Tregothnan, Cornwall. Fortescue was returned unopposed as an opposition Whig Member of Parliament for Barnstaple on his family's interest at the 1727 British general election. He voted against the Administration in almost every division. He was returned for Barnstaple unopposed again at the 1734 British general election. Castle Hill, Filleigh
Castle Hill in the parish of Filleigh in North Devon, is an early Neo-Palladian country house situated north-west of South Molton and south-east of Barnstaple. It was built in 1730 by Hugh Fortescue, 14th Baron Clinton (1696–1751), who was later created in 1751 1st Baron Fortescue and 1st Earl of Clinton, the son of Hugh Fortescue (died 1719), lord of the manor of Filleigh, Weare Giffard, etc., whose family is earliest recorded as residing in the 12th century at the manor of Whympston in the parish of Modbury in South Devon. The Fortescue family became major land owners, influential in British and West Country history. Castle Hill is a rare example in Devon of an 18th-century country mansion "on the grand scale". The house was substantially reconstructed following a disastrous fire in 1934. It was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1967. Sir John Chichester, 4th Baronet (1689 – 2 September 1740) of Youlston Park in the parish of Shirwell near Barnstaple, Devon was a British landowner and Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1734 to 1740. Early life Chichester was baptized on 2 January 1689, the eldest son and heir of Sir Arthur Chichester, 3rd Baronet, MP of Youlston, near Barnstaple, Devon, and his wife Elizabeth Drewe, daughter of Thomas Drewe of The Grange, Broadhembury, Devon. He married Anne Leigh (1695–1723), daughter and heiress of John Leigh (died 1718) of Apse, Newport, Isle of Wight in about 1715. In 1718, he succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father. His wife Anne died in July 1723 and in 1733 he married, as his second wife, Frances Hall, widow of Francis Hall (died 1728) of West Sandford, Crediton, and daughter of Andrew Quicke (1666–1736) of Newton St. Cyres, Devon. Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 7th Baronet
Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 7th Baronet (14 August 1722 – 24 February 1785) of Killerton in Devon and Petherton Park in Somerset, was Member of Parliament for Devon, 1746–1747, for Somerset, 1767–1768, and was High Sheriff of Somerset in 1751. He was a prominent member of the West Country gentry, and a famous staghunter who used as his hunting seats his wife's Exmoor estates of Pixton and Holnicote. Origins He was the eldest son and heir of Sir Hugh Acland, 6th Baronet (1697–1728) of Killerton in Devon, by his wife Cicely Wroth, eldest daughter and eventual sole heiress of Sir Thomas Wroth, 3rd Baronet (1674–1721), MP, of Petherton Park, Somerset. William Courtenay, 1st Viscount Courtenay
William Courtenay, 1st Viscount Courtenay (11 February 1709 – 16 May 1762), also ''de jure'' 7th Earl of Devon, was a British peer. He was the son of William Courtenay, 6th Earl of Devon and 2nd Baronet Courtenay, and Lady Anne Bertie. Life Sir William Courtenay was educated at Westminster School and graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford University in 1731 with a Master of Arts. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Courtenay and ''de jure'' to the title of 7th Earl of Devon on 10 October 1735. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law by Magdalen College in 1739. He held the office of Member of Parliament for Honiton as a Tory between 1734 and 1741 and for Devon from 1741 to 6 May 1762, when he was created 1st Viscount Courtenay of Powderham Castle. John Bampfylde (8 April 1691 – 17 September 1750) of Hestercombe in Somerset, was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1715 and 1741. Early life and family Bampfylde was the second son of Colonel Hugh Bampfield (died 1690), (eldest son and heir apparent of Sir Coplestone Bampfylde, 2nd Baronet (c. 1633–1692) of Poltimore and North Molton, Devon, whom he predeceased) by his wife Mary Clifford, daughter of James Clifford of Ware. His elder brother was Sir Coplestone Bampfylde, 3rd Baronet (c. 1689–1727) of Poltimore. The Bampfield family had been seated at Poltimore since about 1300. Henry Rolle, 1st Baron Rolle (7 November 1708 – 17 August 1750) of Stevenstone, Devon, was a British landowner and politician. Origins Rolle was the eldest son of John Rolle (1679–1730), Member of Parliament for Devon (who had declined the offer of an earldom by Queen Anne) by his wife Isabella Walter, daughter of Sir William Walter, 2nd Baronet, of Saresden, Oxfordshire. His younger brother John Rolle Walter assumed the surname of Walter on succeeding to the estates of his maternal uncle and also represented Devon in Parliament. Career Rolle succeeded his father as Member of Parliament for Devon on the latter's death in 1730, and held the seat until 1741. From 1741 to 1748 he represented Barnstaple in Parliament.
