Theodore Fry
Sir Theodore Fry, 1st Baronet (1 May 1836 – 5 February 1912) was an English businessman and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1895. Life He was the son of Francis Fry, of Bristol, and his wife Matilda Penrose, daughter of Daniel Penrose and was educated at Bristol. Fry was active in business in the North East, as director of the Bearpark Coal and Coke Co; director of Shildon and Weardale Waterworks, and head of Fry Janson and Co, iron manufacturers of Darlington. He was mayor of Darlington 1877–1878. At the 1880 general election Fry was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Darlington, and held the seat until the 1895 general election. He was made a baronet, of Woodburn in the parish of Blackwell in the County of Durham, in 1894. Edward Pease (railway Pioneer)
Edward Pease (31 May 1767 – 31 July 1858), a woollen manufacturer from Darlington, England, was the main promoter of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825. He is sometimes referred to as the "Father of the Railways". Background and education Pease was born on 31 May 1767 as the eldest son of the Darlington woollen manufacturer Joseph Pease (1737–1808) and his wife, Mary Richardson. The family were prominent Quakers: his brother Joseph Pease (1772–1846) was a founder of the Peace Society in 1817 and involved in the second, 1839 Anti-Slavery Society, for which he wrote tracts. Edward boarded at a school in Leeds run by Joseph Tatham the elder, and then joined his father's woollen business at the age of 15. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British hereditary honour that is not a peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Black Knights, White Knights, and Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). There have been two baronetcies created for members of the Fry family, both in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Both creations are extinct. The Fry Baronetcy, of Woodburn in the parish of Blackwell in the County of Durham, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 6 February 1894 for the businessman and Liberal politician Theodore Fry. Arthur Pease (MP)
Arthur Pease, DL (12 September 1837 – 27 August 1898) was a British politician, son of Joseph Pease. Biography He was a Liberal Member of Parliament for Whitby from 1880 to 1885, and a Liberal Unionist MP for Darlington from 1895 until his death in 1898, aged 60. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Opium in India from 1893 to 1895. He married on 14 April 1864 to Mary Lecky Pike. Sophia Pease
Sophia Fry later Lady Fry (11 June 1837 – 30 March 1897) was a British political activist, notable for founding the Women's Liberal Federation. Life Born in Darlington as Sophia Pease, she was brought up as a Quaker and as an activist in liberal politics. Her parents were John Pease who was a Quaker and a director of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and Sophia Pease who was also a Quaker. She and her sister Mary Anna were educated at home, and for one year at a school in Frenchay, where she met Sarah Sturge and Theodore Fry. She developed an interest in education for the working class, and started running weekly training for pupil-teachers, and ran cookery classes. Sophia married Fry in 1862, the couple settling in Darlington, and had eight children. Sophia was a founder of the Girls' Friends Day School in Bristol and was active in the North of England College, run by the British and Foreign School Society.
