Theo Jubitana
Theodoris Bernardus Jubitana (10 April 1965 – 20 July 2021) was a Surinamese administrator and politician. He was captain of the indigenous village Hollandse Kamp since 2011. In addition, he was chairman of the Association of Indigenous Village Heads Suriname (VIDS) since 2017 and leader of the political party Amazon Party Suriname (APS) since 2019. He died in July 2021 from the effects of COVID-19. Early life Theodoris Bernardus Jubitana was born in Nickerie District on 10 April 1965, to a Lokono family, the ninth of eleven children. He grew up in the village of Tapoeripa along the Nickerie River. After elementary school, he studied for six years in a Paramaribo boarding school for children from the interior of Suriname. He then took classes at a technical school, and completed training to become a teacher of industrial education (OLNO). Jubitana married Marcia Parana in 1995, and they had six children. Nickerie District
Nickerie is a district of Suriname, on the north-west coast. Nickerie's capital city is Nieuw-Nickerie. Another town is Wageningen. The district borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Surinamese district of Coronie to the east, the Surinamese district of Sipaliwini to the south and the region of East Berbice-Corentyne in Guyana to the west. Nickerie has a population of 36.639 (2004) and an area of 5,353 km2. Nickerie's population includes East Indian, Javanese, Afro-Surinamese, Chinese, and Europeans. Nickerie is bordered with Guyana. Wanica District
Wanica is a district of Suriname located in the north of the country. Wanica's capital city is Lelydorp, the second-largest city in Suriname. Wanica has a population of 118,222 and an area of 443 km2. Following neighbouring Paramaribo, Wanica is the second most populated and urbanised district of Suriname. Two-thirds of the country's population live in these two districts. History The district was created in 1983 out of parts of the former Suriname District. The district was named Wanica after Pad van Wanica, the main road, Wanica Creek (present in the district), and the fact that the name had already been used on old maps. The discovery of gold in Brokopondo and Sipaliwini lead to the construction of the Lawa Railway and growth of the villages next to the railway line, and especially Kofi Djompo. The COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname was caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (). The virus was confirmed to have reached Suriname on 13 March 2020. The case was a person who travelled from the Netherlands the previous week. On 3 April 2020, one person died. On 3 May 2020, all nine cases had recovered. 2020 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname, as well as the COVID-19 crisis. Electoral system The 51 seats in the National Assembly are elected using party-list proportional representation under the D'Hondt method in ten multi-member constituencies containing between two and seventeen seats. The ten electoral constituencies are coterminous with the ten administrative districts of Suriname. Voters also have the option of casting a preferential vote for one of the candidates on the chosen list in order to increase their place in the list, and the candidate(s) having obtained the most preferential votes in the lists that obtained seats are declared elected. Redi Doti
Redi Doti (also ''Redidoti'') is an indigenous village of Lokono and Kalina people, Kalina Amerindians in the resorts of Suriname, resort of Carolina, Suriname, Carolina in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located near the site of Jodensavanne. History The village of Redi Doti was officially founded in 1930 when a Roman Catholic church was constructed, however in 1828 an indigenous village of about 50 people was reported to exist near Jodensavanne, a Jewish autonomous plantation area which was abandoned after a fire in 1832. In the late 1980s, during the Surinamese Interior War, the village was evacuated and partially destroyed. The village was rebuilt in 1992, however many inhabitants have remained in Paramaribo.
