Thenmaradchi
Thenmarachchi is one of the three historic regions of the Jaffna peninsula in northern Sri Lanka. The other two regions are Vadamarachchi and Valikamam. Thenmarachchi is sometimes spelt Thenmarachi, Thenmaraachi or Thenmaraadchi. This area, like the entire Jaffna peninsula, is populated mostly by Tamil people and was for many years under the de facto control of the "Tamil Tigers". Etymology Thenmarachchi translates to ''"possession of southerners"'' or "''rule of the southerners''" in English. It is derived from the Tamil words ''thenmar'' (southerners) and ''achchi'' (possession or rule). Divisional Secretariats Of Sri Lanka
The districts of Sri Lanka are divided into administrative sub-units known as ''divisional secretariats''. These were originally based on the feudal counties, the ''korale''s and ''rata''s. They were formerly known as 'D.R.O. Divisions' after the 'Divisional Revenue Officer'. Later the D.R.O.s became 'Assistant Government Agents' and the Divisions were known as 'A.G.A. Divisions'. Currently, the Divisions are administered by a 'Divisional Secretary', and are known as 'D.S. Divisions'. The 331 divisions are listed below, by district: Divisional secretariats See also * Provinces of Sri Lanka * Districts of Sri Lanka In Sri Lanka, districts ( si, දිස්ත්‍රි‌ක්‌ක, ''Distrikka'', ta, மாவட்டம், ''Māvaṭṭam'') are the second-level administrative divisions, and are included in a province. Chavakachcheri
Chavakachcheri ( ta, சாவகச்சேரி Cāvakaccēri, si, ජාවකච්චේරි Jāvakachchēri) is a large town in the Jaffna peninsula of Jaffna District, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. It may have Javanese people, Javanese origins, as the name "Chaavaka+cheari" literally means Javanese settlement (there are also some references to a Javanese fort in northern Sri Lanka). The town may date back to the Tambralinga, Southeast Asian occupation of Yalpanam, where certain settlements and forts were established by Chandrabhanu to maintain hegemony over the overseas colony. The town is governed by an Urban Council. Chavakachcheri was badly devastated in the Sri Lankan Civil War. Today, the government and the people of Chavakachcheri have rebuilt the town, but the population remains drastically lower than the pre-war years. The 111-year-old Chavakachcheri Hindu College, a high school, is a leading centre of education in the town.http://www.educationtimes.lk/et-scho ...
