TheatreWorks is an independent international performance company based in Singapore. It is an Institute of Public Character. It is currently led by Artistic Director, Ong Keng Sen. TheatreWorks was established in 1985 by Lim Siauw Chong, Lim Kay Tong and Justin Hill at 72-13, a heritage building that was once a rice warehouse on Mohamed Sultan Road and next to the Singapore River. Since establishment, the company has staged over 200 productions and 2,500 performances in Singapore and overseas. After 1999, TheatreWorks hosts and manages the Arts Network Asia (ANA). Ong Keng Sen
Ong Keng Sen (born 20 November 1963; ) is a Singaporean director of the theatre group TheatreWorks, which was founded in 1985. Early life Ong Keng Sen was youngest of six children born to immigrants from Putian, China. Ong joined the drama club at Anglo-Chinese Primary School and went on to serve as president of the Varsity Playhouse of the National University of Singapore as he was studying law. A trained lawyer, he completed his pupillage at Singapore law firm Lee & Lee. Ong is also Fulbright scholar who studied intercultural performance with the Performance Studies Department at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Theatre career Theatre Ong took on the post of artistic director of theatre group TheatreWorks in 1988. He was involved with the production of comedies such as ''Beauty World'' and ''Army Daze''. Singapore River
The Singapore River is a river that flows parallel to Alexandra Road and feeds into the Marina Reservoir in the southern part of Singapore. The immediate upper watershed of the Singapore River is known as the Singapore River Planning Area, although the western part of the watershed is classified under the River Valley planning area. Singapore River planning area sits within the Central Area of the Central Region of Singapore, as defined by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. The planning area shares boundaries with the following – River Valley and Museum to the south, Tanglin and Bukit Merah to the west, Outram to the south and the Downtown Core to the east.
