The Younger Generation (film)
''The Younger Generation'' is a 1929 sound part-talkie American drama film directed by Frank Capra and starring Ricardo Cortez. In addition to sequences with audible dialogue or talking sequences, the film features a synchronized musical score and sound effects along with English intertitles. The soundtrack was recorded using the Western Electric sound-on-film system. The film was produced by Jack Cohn for Columbia Pictures. It was Capra's first sound film. The screenplay was adapted from a 1927 Fannie Hurst play, ''It Is to Laugh''. Plot The child of Jewish immigrants, Morris Goldfish (Ricardo Cortez) finds success as an art dealer. He moves his family to Fifth Avenue and changes his name to Maurice Fish. There, he finds his family to be damaging to his social status. In the end he finds that there is more to life than money. Frank Capra
Frank Russell Capra (born Francesco Rosario Capra; May 18, 1897 – September 3, 1991) was an Italian-born American film director, producer and writer who became the creative force behind some of the major award-winning films of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Italy and raised in Los Angeles from the age of five, his rags-to-riches story has led film historians such as Ian Freer to consider him the " American Dream personified".Freer 2009, pp. 40–41. Capra became one of America's most influential directors during the 1930s, winning three Academy Awards for Best Director from six nominations, along with three other Oscar wins from nine nominations in other categories. Bernard Siegel (actor)
Bernard Siegel (April 19, 1868 – July 9, 1940) was an Austro-Hungarian born American character actor, whose career spanned both the silent film era, as well as carrying over into the beginning of sound pictures. His career spanned over 25 years, during which time he performed in over 50 films. Life and career Siegel was born in the city of Lemberg (today known as Lviv, Ukraine), in the province of Galicia in the Austria-Hungarian Empire on April 19, 1868. His film career began with a small featured role in the 1913 silent film, ''The Third Degree'' (which would be remade in 1919, and again in 1926, the latter film being the first film directed by Michael Curtiz). Over the next 26 years he would appear in almost 70 films, most of those films taking place during the silent era. He would only act in thirteen sound films. Virginia Elizabeth Marshall (October 1, 1918 – January 30, 1982), also known as Little Virginia Marshall, was an American child actress in the silent film era between 1924 and 1930. Biography Virginia Elizabeth Marshall was born on October 1, 1918 in Dallas, Texas to Virginia G. Wallace of Cuba, Missouri, and Wallace L. Marshall of Tyler, Texas. Marshall appeared in a ''Los Angeles Times'' feature entitled ''Stars Tomorrow?'' in April 1925.Los Angeles Times, ''Stars Tomorrow?'', April 1, 1925, Page C4. She was among a group of children that included Vonda Phelps and Virginia Davis. The article questioned whether their stardom would continue or fade away with time. Julanne Johnston (May 1, 1900 – December 26, 1988) was an American silent film actress. Biography Johnston was born and educated in Indianapolis, Indiana, then her family moved to Hollywood. There she took dancing lessons at the Denishawn School and acted with the Hollywood Community Theatre for two years. She also attended the Hollywood School for Girls. Johnston began her career as a solo dancer and toured with Ruth St. Denis during summer vacations from school. In 1924, she was selected to be a WAMPAS Baby Star. Douglas Fairbanks saw Johnston dance in a theater before the premiere of his film ''Robin Hood'', and this exposure resulted in his signing her to be the leading lady in '' The Thief of Bagdad'', with Anna May Wong in 1924. Leon Janney (April 1, 1917 – October 28, 1980) was an American actor and radio personality from 1920 to 1980. Career Leon Elbert Janney was born in Ogden, Utah, to Nathan Haines Janney and Bernice Rebecca Kohn. The names of his parents are confirmed in both Janney’s death certificate (available in Ancestry.com) and in a birth announcement in ''The Ogden Standard'', April 4, 1917. His mother had reportedly performed using the name Bernice Raymon (''The Washington Post'', Oct. 31, 1915), or Ramon (''Philadelphia Inquirer'' April 1, 1934). The story in the ''Inquirer'' states that Janney’s mother gave him the stage name Laon Ramon after moving to Los Angeles to seek more acting work for him. A story by Harold W. Julia Swayne Gordon
Julia Swayne Gordon (born Sarah Victoria Smith; October 29, 1878 – May 28, 1933) was an American actress who appeared in at least 228 films between 1908 and 1933. Early years Gordon was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Louis and Anna Smith and was educated there. She went to Denver to study dramatics under Jessie Bonstelle. Career Gordon moved to New York and acted in stock theater, after which, she performed with Henrietta Crosman and James A. Herne. Gordon's work in film began in 1905 with the Edison Company, and in 1908 she moved to Vitagraph Studios. In 1911 she starred in Vitagraph's screen portrayal of the Lady Godiva legend. Perhaps her most memorable performance, however, is as Richard Arlen's mother in the World War I silent film ''Wings'' (1927), which won the first Academy Award for Best Picture.
