''The Wrestler'' is a 1974 independent film directed by Jim Westman, produced by professional wrestler Verne Gagne and W.R. Frank, starring Ed Asner as Frank Bass, a wrestling promoter. Verne Gagne also stars in the film as Mike Bullard, the current wrestling champion of his "league". After a long reign as champion, Bullard is getting older and feeling pressure from all sides, including his wife and wrestling promoters, to pass the championship to Billy Taylor and retire. Bullard's resistance to their requests that he step aside is the central conflict in the film. "The Wrestler" is the title song from the 2008 film ''The Wrestler.'' The track was written and performed by Bruce Springsteen. The origins of the song are based in a lost and resumed friendship between Springsteen and ''Wrestler'' lead actor Mickey Rourke; Rourke told Springsteen about his upcoming film and asked if Springsteen could write a song for it. Springsteen subsequently did, played it for Rourke and director Darren Aronofsky before a concert. When they liked it, Springsteen gave them the song for no fee. It first appeared in August 2008 at the 65th Venice International Film Festival debut of the film ''The Wrestler''. ''The Wrestler'' is a basalt statuette dating back to between 1500 BCE and 400 BCE, which some believe to be one of the most important sculptures of the Olmec culture. ''The Wrestlers'' (also known as ''The Two Wrestlers'', ''The Uffizi Wrestlers'' or ''The Pancrastinae'') is a Roman marble sculpture after a lost Greek original of the third century BCE. It is now in the Uffizi collection in Florence, Italy. Description, style and authorship The two young men are engaged in the ''pankration'', a kind of wrestling similar to the present-day sport of mixed martial arts. The two figures are wrestling in a position now known as a "cross-body ride" in modern folkstyle wrestling. ''The Wrestlers'' is a large 1853 painting by Gustave Courbet, now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest]. It shows two men engaged in 'French wrestling', inspired by Greco-Roman wrestling. Documents reveal that it shows a match in the former hippodrome on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. His choice of such a huge canvas inspired (among others) Alexandre Falguière's 1875 ''The Wrestlers''. It was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1853 as the pendant to '' The Bathers''. ''Wrestlers'' is a name shared by three closely related 1899 paintings by American artist Thomas Eakins, ( Goodrich catalog #317, #318, #319). The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) owns the finished painting (G-317), and the oil sketch (G-318). The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) owns a slightly smaller unfinished version (G-319). All three works depict a pair of nearly naked men engaged in a wrestling match. ''The Wrestlers'' is an oil painting on millboard by English artist William Etty, painted around 1840 and currently in the York Art Gallery, in York, England. It depicts a wrestling match between a black man and a white man, both glistening with sweat and under an intense light emphasising their curves and musculature. While little documentation of the painting exists prior to 1947, it is likely that it was painted over a period of three evenings at the life class of the Royal Academy. The Royal Academy had moved to new premises in Trafalgar Square in 1837, and the studio used by the life class was cramped and hot, a fact thought to account for the sweatiness of the central figures.
