The World Today (Australian Radio Program)
''The World Today'' is an Australian current affairs program which delivers national and international news and analysis to radio and online audiences nationally and throughout the region. It is broadcast on the ABC Radio National and ABC Local Radio networks. History The show first aired on 21 June 1999. In June 2020, ABC announced that Eleanor Hall would be stepping down from her role from August, after 19 years of hosting the program. Sally Sara has been announced as her replacement. ABC Radio National
Radio National, known on-air as RN, is an Australia-wide public service broadcasting radio network run by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). From 1947 until 1985, the network was known as ABC Radio 2. History 1937: Predecessors and beginnings From 1928, the National Broadcasting Service, as part of the federal Postmaster-General's Department, gradually took over responsibility for all the existing stations that were sponsored by public licence fees ("A" Class licences). ABC Local Radio is a network of publicly owned radio stations in Australia, operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. ABC Local Radio stations broadcast across the continent using terrestrial transmitters and satellites. Its programming consists of news, current affairs, talkback, entertainment, sport, music and local affairs. They are usually reckoned as the flagship ABC radio stations in their areas. Sally Sara
Sally Jane Sara Order of Australia, AM, (born 2 March 1971 in Port Pirie, South Australia) is an Australian journalist and TV presenter. Career Sara's career began with Outback Radio (2WEB) in Bourke, New South Wales. Sara then joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in the late 1990s with stints at Renmark, South Australia, Renmark, Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra. Sara was the ABC's Africa Correspondent from 2000 to 2005, the first woman to hold this post. She has also reported from Jakarta, the Middle East and London during the Timeline of the 2005 London bombings, 2005 London Bombings. Current affairs is a genre of broadcast journalism in which major news stories are discussed at length in a timely manner. This differs from regular news broadcasts that place emphasis on news reports presented for simple presentation as soon as possible, often with a minimum of analysis. It is also different from the news magazine show format in that the events are discussed immediately. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the national broadcaster of Australia. It is principally funded by direct grants from the Australian Government and is administered by a government-appointed board. Eleanor Hall
Eleanor Hall is an Australian journalist and presenter. Career Eleanor Hall studied arts/law at the University of Sydney and graduated with first class honours in history. She was the youngest person ever to be awarded a Harkness fellowship Harkness fellowships in 1986. In the US, she worked in documentaries at WGBH TV in Boston and graduated with a master's degree in Journalism from New York's Columbia University. Monica Ann Attard OAM (born 12 December 1958) is an Australian journalist and academic.
