''The World Is Watching'' is a Canadian short documentary film, directed by Peter Raymont and released in 1988. The film examines media coverage of the Nicaraguan Revolution through the lens of an ABC News crew on the ground in the country, documenting the various production pressures and limitations that can hamper the efforts of journalists to fully and accurately report a story; its thesis hinges in part on the fact that Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega's key announcement that he would negotiate with the Contras was made only after the network's news production deadline for the day, leaving the network's initial reports on '' ABC World News Tonight'' able to report that he had made a speech but almost completely unable to say anything informative about it. Peter Raymont
Peter Raymont (born February 28, 1950) is a Canadian filmmaker and producer and the president of White Pine Pictures, an independent film, television and new media production company based in Toronto. Among his films are ''Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire'' (2005), ''A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman'' (2007), ''The World Stopped Watching'' (2003) and ''The World Is Watching'' (1988). The 2011 feature documentary ''West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson'' and 2009's ''Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould'' were co-directed with Michèle Hozer. Education Raymont attended Crighton Street School, Rockcliffe Park Public School and Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa. He graduated from Trinity College School in Port Hope in 1968. The Gemini Awards were awards given by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television between 1986–2011 to recognize the achievements of Canada's television industry. The Gemini Awards are analogous to the Emmy Awards given in the United States and the BAFTA Television Awards in the United Kingdom.
