The Wonderful Grand Band (album)
''The Wonderful Grand Band'' is an eponymous debut album release by The Wonderful Grand Band. The album was inspired by music the band played during a six-part television mini-series on the CBC called The Root Seller. The songs on the album are a mix of traditional music and folk-rock. The album comprises music composed by Emile Benoit and songs written by Ron Hynes. This album features some of Emile's first recorded music, specifically ''Emile's Dream'' which later, in 1980, the album of the same name was released by Emile featuring titles that also appear on The Wonderful Grand Band. The album also features the first and original version of the widely covered ''Sonny's Dream'' which also appears re-recorded on their second album, ''Living in a Fog''. The Wonderful Grand Band is a Canadian music and comedy group formed in 1978 in St. John's, Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. History The group was founded in 1978, and included comedians Greg Malone (actor), Greg Malone and Tommy Sexton. They released their first album, ''The Wonderful Grand Band'', in 1979. The group had an eponymous television musical variety show on CBC Television. This ran for six episodes under the title ''The Root Seller'' in 1978, before relaunching in 1980 as ''The Wonderful Grand Band'', which produced 40 more episodes between 1980 and 1983. Stephenville (Canada 2021 Census population 6540) is a town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. Ron Hynes (December 7, 1950 – November 19, 2015) was a folk singer-songwriter from Newfoundland and Labrador. He was especially known for his composition "Sonny's Dream", which has been recorded worldwide by many artists and was named the 41st greatest Canadian song of all time on the 2005 CBC Radio One series '' 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version''. Biography Ron Hynes was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador in December 1950, and raised in Ferryland. Sonny's Dream
"Sonny's Dream" (also known as "Sonny") is a folk song written by Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundlander Ron Hynes in 1976. It tells the story of a man who wishes to fulfill his dreams, but is bound to his rural homeland by his family, particularly his lonely mother. Hynes wrote the song while on a roadtrip with his band in western Canada and based it on his uncle, Thomas "Sonny" O'Neill, who had taught him how to play guitar and had pushed him play music professionally. It was first recorded by The Wonderful Grand Band on their eponymous album, but appeared re-recorded on their second album ''Living in a Fog'' in 1981. Subsequent to the songwriter Ron Hynes' death, a crowd was organized for a singalong in Bannerman Park, Bannerman Park, St. John's in remembrance and celebration of his life.
