''The Whip'' is a 1928 American silent drama film directed by Charles Brabin and starring Dorothy Mackaill. It was based on a 1912 play '' The Whip'' by Cecil Raleigh and Henry Hamilton and distributed by First National. This film was a silent released with a Vitaphone soundtrack of music and effects. Charles Brabin
Charles Brabin (April 17, 1882 – November 3, 1957) was a British-American film director. Biography Born in Liverpool, England, he was educated at St. Francis Xavier College. Brabin sailed to New York City in the early 1900s and, while holding down odd jobs there, he tried his hand as a stage actor. He joined the Edison Manufacturing Company around 1908, first acting, later writing and directing. He was active during the silent era, then pursued a short-lived career in talkies. His last film was ''A Wicked Woman'' for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1934. Brabin married his first wife socialite Suzan "Susette" Jeanette Mosher, the daughter of Edwin Howard Mosher and Jennie Slater Mosher of New York City. They wed December 14, 1913, at Bedford Congregational Church in the Bronx, shortly after Brabin returned from a trip to England and Europe. The UCLA Film & Television Archive is a visual arts organization focused on the preservation, study, and appreciation of film and television, based at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Cineteca Italiana is a private film archive located in Milan, Italy, established in 1947, and as a foundation in 1996. History Established in 1947, and as a foundation in 1996, the Cineteca Italiana houses over 20,000 films and more than 100,000 photographs from the history of Italian and international cinema. Particularly important is the nitrate film section; the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) has defined the Cineteca Italiana as one of the most important silent film archives in Europe. Louis Payne
William Louis Payne (January 13, 1873 – August 14, 1953) was an American character actor of the silent and sound film eras, as well as legitimate theater. Biography Born in Pennsylvania, Payne's acting life began in the first decade of the 1900s, when he appeared in the Broadway play, ''Her Majesty, the Girl Queen of Nordenmark'', which ran at the Manhattan Theatre in 1900. In 1903 he played Nathaniel Winkle in ''Mr. Pickwick'' at the Herald Square Theatre and later the Grand Opera House. In 1906, he married famous stage actress Mrs. Leslie Carter, fifteen years her junior, and remained married to her until her death in 1937. He made his film debut in 1915's '' DuBarry'', a film created to highlight Carter, who was a protégé of the playwright David Belasco. Belasco wrote the stage play of the same name on which the film is based, and in which Carter starred on Broadway.
