Welsh Art
Welsh art refers to the traditions in the visual arts associated with Wales and Welsh people, its people. Most art found in, or connected with, Wales is essentially a regional variant of the forms and styles of the rest of the British Isles, a very different situation from that of Welsh-language literature, Welsh literature. The term Art in Wales is often used in the absence of a clear sense of what "Welsh art" is, and to include the very large body of work, especially in landscape art, produced by non-Welsh artists in Wales (or with a Welsh subject) since the later 18th century. Glenys Cour
Glenys Irene Cour ( Carthew, born 1924) is a Welsh artist. Biography Cour was born in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1924. From 1945 until 1948, she studied at Cardiff College of Art under Ceri Richards and married the sculptor Ronald Cour in 1949. From 1963 to 2000, she taught painting and architectural glass at Swansea Institute of Higher Education, and the University of Wales, Swansea. Cour has been a member of The Welsh Group for a number of years, taking part in many of the group's exhibitions, including its 50th anniversary in 1998. She was elected Royal Cambrian Academician in 2009 and is also one of the founding artists of Swansea's Mission Gallery. Ernest Zobole
Ernest Zobole (25 April 1927 – 27 November 1999) was a Wales, Welsh painter and art teacher. Zobole's paintings, originally oil on canvas, later switching to oil on board, reflected the industrial setting of the Rhondda, Rhondda Valleys. A member of the ''Rhondda Group'', a circle of artists from the area, Zobole is seen as one of Wales' "most important artists...one of the visionary artists of Wales". Early history Zobole was born in the village of Ystrad, Rhondda, in 1927, to Italian immigrants who had moved to Wales in 1910. He was educated at Porth Grammar School, before spending five years training at the Cardiff College of Art. Islwyn Watkins
Islwyn Watkins (1938 – December 30, 2018) was a Welsh artist, educator and slipware ceramics expert. Born in Tonypandy, Rhondda, he studied at Cardiff College of Art from 1954 to 1959 and was influenced by the work of Kurt Schwitters. Watkins was a member of The Welsh Group from 1959. Watkins taught art at Ravenscroft School from 1959 to 1964 and later studied lithography at Hornsey College of Art. In 1960 Watkins started to make abstract, waste wood assemblages. He collaborated with Jeff Nuttall, the author of ''Bomb Culture''. A book by Nuttall called ''Mr Watkins got drunk and had to be carried home'' was named after him. In 1965 together with Bruce Lacey and John Latham he helped create the ''sTigma'', an installation at Better Books in Charing Cross Road, London. John Petts (artist)
Ronald John Petts (10 January 1914 – 26 August 1991) was a British artist. Petts was born in London, but is considered a Welsh artist and is known for his engravings and stained glass works. Biography Petts was born in the Hornsey area of north London but, despite a childhood illness limiting his education, an interest in art and Saturday morning lessons at the Hornsey School of Art led to him becoming a full-time student there in 1930. A British Institution scholarship allowed Petts to study at the Royal Academy Schools for two years from 1933, during which time he also took evening classes in printing at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. In 1935 Petts married the artist Brenda Chamberlain in London and the couple set up home near Llanllechid in north Wales, where they held two joint exhibitions of their art and supported themselves by creating and selling greeting cards and doing some part-time teaching in Bangor. Arthur Giardelli
Vincent Charles Arthur Giardelli, MBE, (11 April 1911 – 2 November 2009) was a Welsh artist of Italian paternal descent. Giardelli's work is held in many collections including the Tate, the National Museum of Wales, the National Library of Wales, Contemporary Art Society of Wales, Arts Council of Wales, Museum of Modern Art Wales, Brecknock Museum, Tenby Museum and Art Gallery together with museums and galleries in New York City, Dublin, Nantes, Bratislava and Prague. Life Giardelli was raised in Surrey and attended Hertford College, Oxford, where he did a degree in Modern Languages. He later trained at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, 1930–34. Brenda Chamberlain (artist)
Brenda Irene Chamberlain (17 March 1912 – 11 July 1971) was a Welsh artist, poet and writer. She won the first two Gold Medals awarded by the National Eisteddfod of Wales in the Fine Art category, for her paintings ''Girl with a Siamese Cat'' (1951) and ''The Cristin Children'' (1953), and her written works include ''Tide-race'', a memoir of 15 years spent living on Bardsey Island. An expatriate on the island of Hydra, Greece, from 1961 to 1967, she then returned to Wales, where she died in 1971. Her papers are preserved by the National Library of Wales; examples of her artworks are found in several collections. ''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition.
