The Way Things Work (album)
''The Way Things Work'' is the debut album by American improvisational band Unknown Instructors, featuring Mike Watt ( Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Stooges, Dos, Banyan), George Hurley (Minutemen, Firehose, Red Krayola), Joe Baiza (Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress Of), Jack Brewer (Saccharine Trust), and poet Dan McGuire. The album was created and recorded on the spot in one day in 2003 at Karma Studio in San Pedro, California. Watt would record his third solo album ''The Secondman's Middle Stand'' in the same studio five months later. McGuire credited the Saccharine Trust album '' Worldbroken'' as an influence saying he wanted to use it "as a template for that first album." The album has been compared to Captain Beefheart's classic ''Trout Mask Replica''. George Hurley
George Hurley (born September 4, 1958) is a drummer noted for his work with Minutemen and fIREHOSE. Music career Early years Originally from the East Coast, Hurley and his family moved to San Pedro, California, when he was six years old. Hurley was a surfer before devoting himself to music. A self-taught musician, Hurley created his own drumsticks out of Plexiglas and wood at the Boys Club in his youth. He got his first drumkit when he was nineteen after trading a motorcycle for it. Although he is known as a punk drummer, Hurley's musical influences are primarily jazz-based. Even though he went to the same high school as D. Boon and Mike Watt he did not meet them until around 1978. That same year, Hurley formed The Reactionaries with Boon, Watt, and Martin Tamburovich. Chuck Dukowski
Gary Arthur McDaniel (born February 1, 1954 ), better known by his stage name Chuck Dukowski, is an American punk rock musician most well known for being the bass player, and occasional songwriter for Black Flag. Career Early years Dukowski was born and raised in a self-described middle-class family in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California where his father worked for TRW. Dukowski's mother was German and her family lineage had many musicians and composers. Dukowski attended San Pedro High School and later Chadwick School, where he played football. After graduation, he went to college to study psychobiology. Würm Dukowski's first band was Würm which started in 1973. By 1977, the band had moved to Hermosa Beach and lived in a communal house called "the Würmhole" but broke up later that year. ''Double Nickels on the Dime'' is the third album by American punk trio Minutemen, released on the California independent record label SST Records in 1984. A double album containing 45 songs, ''Double Nickels on the Dime'' combines elements of punk rock, funk, country, spoken word and jazz, and references a variety of themes, from the Vietnam War and racism in America, to working-class experience and linguistics. After recording new material, each band member selected songs for different sides of the double album, with the fourth side named "Chaff". Don Van Vliet (; born Don Glen Vliet; January 15, 1941 – December 17, 2010) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart. Conducting a rotating ensemble known as The Magic Band, he recorded 13 studio albums between 1967 and 1982. ''The Secondman's Middle Stand'' was Mike Watt's third solo album and the first full-length recording that he had made under his own name since the release of ''Contemplating The Engine Room'' in 1997. The storyline for the nine-track album parallel's Watt's real-life January 2000 bout with a near-fatal infection in his perineum with one of his favorite pieces of literature, Dante's ''The Divine Comedy''. The first three tracks of the album represent the ''Inferno'' (Watt's illness up until the time the abscess burst); the second three songs represent the ''Purgatorio'' (Watt's surgery and subsequent recovery), and the final three represent the ''Paradisio'' (Watt's resuming his everyday life and career). Jack Brewer (musician)
Joaquin "Jack" Brewer is an American musician known as the singer and lyricist for the Los Angeles post-hardcore band Saccharine Trust which he cofounded with guitarist Joe Baiza. Biography Brewer was born in Havana, Cuba in 1958. As a child, his family moved often living in New Orleans, San Pedro, Harbor City, and Wilmington. Brewer began playing guitar in his early teens His first band was called The Obstacles which played new wave pop. Brewer met Joe Baiza in Wilmington one summer and Baiza began attending band rehearsals. Baiza joined the band as bass player and slowly started moving the band from a pop sound to something more punk. One by one band members left until it was just Brewer and Baiza.
