The Wassaic Project
The Wassaic Project is a non-profit artist-run arts, community and art education space in Wassaic, New York founded in 2008 that hosts festivals, community events and year-round artist residencies. Currently it consists of a year-round competitive Artist-in-residence, residency program and summer arts programming which culminate in a large, free summer festival (usually in August). History Co-founders Bowie Zunino and Eve Biddle had done community organizing in Providence, Rhode Island. Zunino's father, an architect and developer of historic sites like South Street Seaport, had just finished preserving the Maxon Mills, with a Grain elevator, wood crib elevator, in the hamlet of Wassaic, New York, near where he owned a house. Artist Colony
An art colony, also known as an artists' colony, can be defined two ways. Its most liberal description refers to the organic congregation of artists in towns, villages and rural areas, often drawn by areas of natural beauty, the prior existence of other artists or art schools there, and a lower cost of living. More commonly, the term refers to the guest-host model of a mission-driven planned community, which administers a formal process for awarding artist residencies. In the latter case, a typical mission might include providing artists with the time, space and support to create; fostering community among artists; and providing arts education (lectures, workshops) to the public. Hillerbrand+Magsamen
Hillerbrand+Magsamen is the collaborative husband and wife visual art team of Mary Magsamen and Stephan Hillerbrand. Through collaboration, Hillerbrand+Magsamen create sculpture, installation, performance, video, and photographic works to explore family identity, everyday interactions and consumer culture. Personal life Mary Magsamen is currently the curator of Media and Film at the Aurora Picture Show. Magsamen earned her BFA from the University of Denver and MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Stephan Hillerbrand is currently an Associate Professor and Honors College Fellow in the School of Art at the University of Houston. They currently live and work in Houston, Texas. Artist Colonies
An artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse refers to a practitioner in the visual arts only. Amenia, New York
Amenia is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 4,436 at the 2010 census. The town is on the eastern border of the county. History Amenia is one of the original towns formed by act of March 7, 1788. It comprises the width of the Oblong Tract, and the east tier of lots in the Great Nine Partners Patent. Inhabitants prior to European incursion were Pequot, in a village on the west side of a pond they called Wequagnoch. Along with related Native Americans from Connecticut, they held pow wows on land both before and after the incorporation of the town. In 1703 Richard Sackett was granted a patent for land along Wassaic Creek. As this land was already included in the previous Great Nine Partners Patent, Sackett's title was invalid. Sackett was also one of the partners in the Little Nine Partners Patent. William Powhida
William Powhida (born 1976) is an American visual artist and former art critic. Powhida's work is critical and addresses the contemporary art world. Education Powhida received his Master of Fine Arts in painting from Hunter College in January, 2002. Career Topics have included creating an "enemies" list as well as letters addressed to contemporary curators (such as Zach Feuer Gallery), collectors and critics, requesting recognition. His 2009 piece "Relational Wall" includes portraits sourced from Artforum's "Scene & Herd". He also produces portraits drawn entirely from memory. Early career In 2004, Powhida began compiling lists of enemies, rendering portraits of each enemy in graphite and gouache with insults written beneath each face. Wassaic, New York
Wassaic is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, United States. Located in southeastern New York in the valley of the Ten Mile River, Wassaic is bordered to the east and west by mountain ranges. The name of the hamlet is derived from the Native American word ''Washaic''; "land of difficult access" or "narrow valley". However, Europeans found ready access by following the Housatonic River valley up from Long Island Sound and through the mountains along the Ten Mile River. One of the earliest recorded Europeans to settle in Wassaic was Richard Sackett. He petitioned the Colonial Government on March 11, 1703 for a license to purchase a tract of land in "Washiack".
