The Voice (franchise)
''The Voice'' is an international reality television singing competition franchise. It is based on the reality singing competition '' The Voice of Holland'', which was originally created by Dutch producer John de Mol and Dutch singer Roel van Velzen. It has become a rival to the '' Idols'' franchise, '' The Four'', '' Rising Star'' and '' The X Factor''. Up until 2020, the franchise was owned by Talpa Network. The current owner is ITV Studios. Originated in the Netherlands, many other countries adapted the format and began airing their own versions starting in 2010. Up till now, seven different versions of ''The Voice'' have been produced by countries/regions all around the world. Some programs still stick to the original format of the show while most of them are produced with twists of the format added. John De Mol Jr
Johannes Hendrikus Hubert "John" de Mol Jr. (born 24 April 1955) is a Dutch media tycoon television producer and billionaire. De Mol is one of the men behind production companies Endemol and Talpa. He is known for being the creator of several major reality television formats including '' Big Brother'', ''Fear Factor'' and'' The Voice''. ''Forbes'' estimated him to be worth about US$ 1.5 billion in 2017. Endemol De Mol acquired his fortune producing television programmes. In 1997–1999 he developed the popular reality television series '' Big Brother'' with his production company, John de Mol Produkties. ''Big Brother'' is a Dutch reality competition television franchise created by John de Mol Jr., first broadcast in the Netherlands in 1999, and subsequently syndicated internationally. The show features contestants called "housemates" or "HouseGuests" who live together in a specially constructed house that is isolated from the outside world. The name is inspired by Big Brother from George Orwell's novel ''Nineteen Eighty-Four'', and the housemates are continuously monitored during their stay in the house by live television cameras as well as personal audio microphones. The Voice Of Holland (season 5)
The fifth season of the Dutch reality singing competition The Voice of Holland, created by media tycoon John de Mol, aired during 2014 on RTL4. Martijn Krabbé and Wendy van Dijk returned as co-hosts, while Jamai Loman replaced Winston Gerschtanowitz as host of the red room. Marco Borsato, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Ilse DeLange and Ali B returned as coaches. One of the important premises of the show is the quality of the singing talent. Four coaches, themselves popular performing artists, train the talents in their group and occasionally perform with them. Talents are selected in blind auditions, where the coaches cannot see, but only hear the auditioner. Blind Audition
In a blind audition the identity of the performer is concealed from the judges so as to prevent bias. The performance takes place behind a curtain so that the judges cannot see the performer. Blind auditions have become standard in symphony orchestras. In the 1970's, jazz bassist and clinical psychologist Art Davis unsuccessfully filed suit against the New York Philharmonic for racial discrimination. Although his suit failed, his efforts been credited for helping pave the way to the current system of blind auditions for orchestras. In 1980, American trombonist Abbie Conant was selected in a blind audition as the overwhelming first choice for Principal Trombonist of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, but was subsequently subjected to sexism by the director Sergiu Celibidache. ''Star Academy'', called ''Operación Triunfo'' ("Operation Triumph") in Spanish-speaking countries, is a highly successful television pop music talent contest with viewer voting and reality show elements. Nick & Simon are a Dutch singer-songwriter duo composed of Simon Keizer and Nick Schilder. They became popular in their home country the Netherlands in 2006.
