The Vital Spark
''The Vital Spark'' is a BBC Scotland television series set in the western isles of Scotland in the 1930s, based on the Para Handy books by Neil Munro. It starred Roddy McMillan as Peter "Para Handy" MacFarlane, captain of the puffer ''Vital Spark''. The series followed the ''Vital Spark's'' adventures around the coastal waters of west Scotland and the various schemes that Para Handy would get himself and his crew involved in. The comedy was first broadcast in August 1965 as an episode of the BBC’s ''Comedy Playhouse'' series. Following this two series, of six and seven episodes respectively, were commissioned by BBC Scotland and transmitted in early 1966, and autumn 1967. Both series were made in black-and-white. Alex McAvoy
Alex McAvoy (10 March 1928 – 16 June 2005) was a Scottish actor known for his roles as Sunny Jim in the BBC Scotland adaptation of Neil Munro's Para Handy stories, ''The Vital Spark'', and as the teacher in Pink Floyd's musical film, ''The Wall''. As a young man McAvoy enrolled at the School of Art in Glasgow's Renfrew Street before, in the 1950s, joining the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. As a young actor he played the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow's Gorbals district alongside such future stars as John Cairney and Mary Marquis. In the earlier part of his career McAvoy ventured into variety and light entertainment and was the first foil to Scottish comedy singer Andy Stewart. He developed a love of mime and featured in Scottish pantomime, with featured roles at the King's Theatres in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Walter Carr (1 April 1925 – 30 May 1998) was a Scottish people, Scottish actor and comedian. He played the servant, Jack, in the Gateway Theatre (Edinburgh), Edinburgh Gateway Company's Edinburgh International Festival production of Robert McLellan's historical comedy ''The Flouers o Edinburgh'' in August 1957, and was in the cast of its production of ''All for Mary'' by Kay Bannerman and Harold Brooke in February 1958. He played one of the Vices in Tyrone Guthrie's Edinburgh Festival production of ''Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaites'' at the Church of Scotland's General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, Assemby Hall in August 1959.
