The Virgin and Child with St. Anne (Dutch: ) by Jan van Steffeswert refers to two wooden sculptures in the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, the Netherlands. One is unsigned and dated 1500, the other one is signed and dated but difficult to decipher (1511?). Jan van Steffeswert (ca. 1460–1530) was a woodcarver from the Netherlands who worked in Maastricht in the late 15th and early 16th century. Unsigned sculpture Depictions of Christ Child with his mother and grandmother were popular in the late Middle Ages. The scene frequently shows Mary and Christ reading. In the unsigned sculpture in the Bonnefantenmuseum, the child is shown grasping a bowl of porridge. Due to the relatively small size and the emphasis on domesticity, it has been suggested that the sculpture had been commissioned for a home rather than a church. Jan van Steffeswert or alternatively Jan van Steffenswert or Jan van Stevensweert (c. 1460 – c. 1531) was an Early Netherlandish sculptor and wood carver based in Maastricht. Contrary to the customs of the time, he signed at least some of the works he produced, using variously ''Jan Bieldesnider'', ''Jan van Weerd'' or ''Jan van Steffeswert''. The Bonnefanten Museum is a museum of fine art in Maastricht, Netherlands. History The museum was founded in 1884 as the historical and archaeological museum of the Dutch province of Limburg. The name Bonnefanten Museum is derived from the French 'bons enfants' ('good children'), the popular name of a former convent that housed the museum from 1951 until 1978. In 1995, the museum moved to its present location, a former industrial site named 'Céramique'. The new building was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi. With its rocket-shaped cupola overlooking the river Maas, it is one of Maastricht's most prominent modern buildings. Since 1999, the museum has become exclusively an art museum. Eijsden
Eijsden (; li, Èèsjde ) is a village situated in the very south of the European country the Netherlands. It is located in the southwestern part of the province of Limburg. Until 1 January 2011, Eijsden was the main village in a municipality with the same name. On that date this municipality merged with the neighbouring one of Margraten, resulting in nowadays Eijsden-Margraten municipality, in which Eijsden again is the biggest place. This village is one of the most southerly places in the Netherlands, for in its south it is extending up to the most southerly part of the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. Echt (; ) is a city in the Dutch municipality of Echt-Susteren in the province of Limburg, Netherlands. It was a municipality itself until it merged with the municipality of Susteren on 1 January 2003. The municipality of Echt had about 19,300 inhabitants and an area of about 75,13 square km.
