"The Very Thought of You" is a pop standard that was recorded and published in 1934 with music and lyrics by Ray Noble (musician), Ray Noble. The song was first recorded by Ray Noble and His Orchestra with Al Bowlly on vocals for His Master's Voice, HMV in England in April 1934. This record was then released in the United States by Victor Records, Victor, and it reached number one for five weeks on the pop music charts. The song was the subject of litigation in 1962. In 1934, Noble assigned the copyright to British publisher Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly, Campbell, Connelly & Company. Before the copyright was renewed, however, Noble assigned the United States copyright to M. Witmark & Sons. A suit was brought by Campbell, Connelly against Noble, stating that the assignment covered all rights, including rights in the US. A British High Court judge ruled in favor of Campbell, Connelly. Jimmy Campbell (born James Alexander Campbell-Tyrie; 5 April 1903–19 August 1967) and Reg Connelly (born Reginald John Connelly; 22 October 1895–23 September 1963) were English songwriters and Music publisher (popular music), music publishers. Writing together in the 1920s and 1930s, they sometimes used the pseudonym Irving King for their song compositions, and often worked as lyricists in collaboration with other composers. Together, they established the successful music publishing firm Campbell Connelly. Early life and songwriting partnership Connelly was born in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, in 1895, and Campbell in Gosforth, Northumberland, in 1903.
