The Vanishing Pioneer
''The Vanishing Pioneer'' is a 1928 American silent Western film directed by John Waters and starring Jack Holt, Sally Blane and William Powell. Holt's son, Tim makes his screen debut in this film The film is now lost. It is based on a story by Zane Grey. Parts of the film were shot in Zion National Park and Springdale, Utah. Plot A settlement of descendants of historical pioneers is threatened when their water supply is cut off by the large town that is growing nearby. The settlers are led by a rancher who battles back against the corrupt political leadership of the townspeople. John Waters (director Born 1893)
John Waters (October 31, 1893 – May 5, 1965) was an American film director, second unit director and, initially, an assistant director. His career began in the early days of silent film and culminated in two consecutive Academy Award nominations in the newly instituted (but short-lived) category of Best Assistant Director. He won on his second nomination, for MGM's ''Viva Villa!'', and received a certificate of merit; the certificate was replaced with an Oscar statuette in 1965. Assistant director and director during 1910s and 1920s A native of New York City, John Waters entered the motion picture industry in its formative years. Fred Kohler
Fred Kohler (April 20, 1888 – October 28, 1938) was an American actor. Career Fred Kohler was born in Kansas City, Missouri or in Dubuque, Iowa. As a teen, he began to pursue a career in vaudeville, but worked other jobs to support himself. He lost part of his right hand in a mining accident during this time. Eventually he was able to join a touring company, and worked steadily in show business for several years. His son Fred Kohler Jr. also became an actor. America's budding film industry drew a 20-something Kohler to Hollywood, where he made his start in silent films. His first role was in the 1911 short ''The Code of Honor'', and he had an uncredited role in Cecil B. DeMille's feature film ''Joan the Woman'' (1917), but a steady stream of parts did not begin until ''The Tiger's Trail'' (1919). Kohler's stern features earned him a niche playing villains.
