The Understudy (Upstairs, Downstairs)
"The Understudy" is the tenth episode of the fifth and final season of the period drama '' Upstairs, Downstairs''. It first aired on 9 November 1975 on ITV. Background "The Understudy" was recorded in the studio on 10 and 11 July 1975. Shortly before this episode aired, an episode of ''Carry On Laughing'' called "And In My Lady's Chamber" was broadcast. This was a spoof of ''Upstairs, Downstairs'' with Joan Sims as Mrs Breeches and Jack Douglas as Clodson, and the Bellamys became the Pellamys. Three weeks later, another ''Carry On Laughing'' episode used the same characters in the episode "Who Needs Kitchener?", a spoof of the fourth series of ''Upstairs, Downstairs''. After "The Understudy" had been filmed, the main cast of ''Upstairs, Downstairs'' filmed the Christmas documentary '' Russell Harty Goes...Upstairs, Downstairs'', which was aired on Boxing Day 1975. Upstairs, Downstairs (1971 TV Series)
''Upstairs, Downstairs'' is a British television drama series produced by London Weekend Television (LWT) for ITV. It ran for 68 episodes divided into five series on ITV from 1971 to 1975. Set in a large townhouse at 165, Eaton Place in Belgravia in central London, the series depicts the servants—"downstairs"—and their masters, the family—"upstairs"—between the years 1903 and 1930, and shows the slow decline of the British aristocracy. Great events feature prominently in each episode but minor or gradual changes are also noted. The show may be regarded as a document of the social and technological changes that occurred during those 27 years, including the Edwardian period, women's suffrage, the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, and the Wall Street Crash. James Bellamy (Upstairs, Downstairs)
Major The Honourable James Rupert Bellamy (1881 – October 1929) is a fictional character in the ITV period drama '' Upstairs, Downstairs'', that was originally broadcast for five series from 1971 to 1975. Jacqueline Tong
Jacqueline Tong (born 21 May 1951) is an English actress. She is best known for playing Daisy Peel in the television series '' Upstairs, Downstairs'' (1973–1975), for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Continuing Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1977. Jenny Tomasin
Jenny Tomasin (22 March 1938 – 3 January 2012) was an English actress best known for her roles in '' Upstairs, Downstairs'' and ''Emmerdale''. Early life Tomasin was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, in 1938 to working class parents. She knew from an early age she wanted to be an actress, although her parents did not support her goal. Career Tomasin's first screen role was in 1972 in ''The Adventures of Barry McKenzie'', as the character Sarah Gort. Her first major role came when she was discovered by '' Upstairs, Downstairs'' producer John Hawkesworth, who noticed Tomasin's photograph in a casting directory. Alan Leonard Hunt (7 February 1942 – 14 March 2007), known as Gareth Hunt, was a British actor best remembered for playing footman Frederick Norton in '' Upstairs, Downstairs'' and Mike Gambit in '' The New Avengers''. Early life Alan Leonard Hunt was born in Battersea, London, in 1942. His father was killed in the Second World War when he was two years old, and he was brought up by his mother, Doris, and his stepfather. At the age of 15, he joined the Merchant Navy. Madeleine Angela Clinton-Baddeley, CBE (4 July 1904 – 22 February 1976) was an English stage and television actress, best-remembered for her role as household cook Mrs. Bridges in the period drama '' Upstairs, Downstairs''.
