Patrick Cassidy (composer)
Patrick Cassidy (born 1956) is an Irish orchestral, choral, and film score composer. Cassidy was born in Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland. He received a master's degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Limerick in 1985, and supported his early compositional activities with a day job as a statistician. He is best known for his narrative cantatas – works he has written for orchestra and choir based on Irish mythology. ''The Children of Lir'', released in September 1993, remained at number one in the Irish classical charts for a full year. It was the first cantata written in the Irish language since the work of Paul McSwiney in the late 1800s. The BBC later produced an hour long documentary on the piece. ''Famine Remembrance'', a commissioned piece to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Irish Famine, was premiered in New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1996. Rhys Meirion is a Welsh opera and classical tenor singer. He was born on 24 February 1966 in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd. He joined the English National Opera in 1999 and became a company principal from 2001 to 2004. He has also sung leading roles at Oper Frankfurt, West Australian Opera and Opera Australia. ''Vide cor meum'' (See my heart) is an aria composed by Irish composer Patrick Cassidy based on Dante Alighieri's '' Vita Nova'', specifically on the sonnet ''A ciascun'alma presa'', third chapter. Composition The song was performed by Libera / The Lyndhurst Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Greenaway. The main voices belong to Danielle de Niese and Bruno Lazzaretti who sing some fragments taken from ''Vita Nova'', supposedly assembled with no grammatical or syntactic sequence. Lucio Dalla (; 4 March 1943 – 1 March 2012) was an Italian singer-songwriter, musician and actor. He also played clarinet and keyboards. Dalla was the composer of " Caruso" (1986), a song dedicated to Italian opera tenor Enrico Caruso, and "L'anno che verrà" (1979). Beginnings Dalla was born in Bologna, Italy. He began to play the clarinet at an early age, in a jazz band in Bologna, and became a member of a local jazz band called Rheno Dixieland Band, together with future film director Pupi Avati. Avati said that he decided to leave the band after feeling overwhelmed by Dalla's talent. He also acknowledged that his film, ''Ma quando arrivano le ragazze?'' "Caruso" is a song written by Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla in 1986. It is dedicated to Enrico Caruso, an Italian tenor. Following Lucio Dalla's death, the song entered the Italian Singles Chart, peaking at number two for two consecutive weeks. The single was also certified platinum by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry. Meaning of the song The song simply tells about the pain and longings of a man who is about to die while he is looking into the eyes of a girl who was very dear to him. The lyrics contain various subtle references to people and places in Caruso's life. Daniel James (23 January 1848 – 16 March 1920), also known by his bardic name of Gwyrosydd, was a Welsh poet and hymn-writer, best known for writing the words of the popular hymn, " Calon Lân" (published in 1892). Early life Daniel James came from Treboeth in Swansea. His father died when he was young. He became a puddler at Morriston ironworks, and afterwards worked at Landore tinplate works. He began to write verse and assumed the bardic name Gwyrosydd (probably meaning "place of privets" ( & territorial suffix ''-ydd'') or possibly "Gower moorlands" (''Gŵyr'' & ''rhosydd'')). He later found work in Tredegar, Dowlais Ironworks, Blaengarw, and Mountain Ash, Rhondda Cynon Taff, where he spent 20 years. Later life He returned to Morriston in 1918 to live with his daughter, and died at Tanylan, Morriston on 16 March 1920. "Pie Jesu" ( ; original Latin: "Pie Iesu" ) is a text from the final couplet of the hymn " Dies irae", and is often included in musical settings of the Requiem Mass as a motet. The phrase means " pious Jesus" in the vocative. Clément Philibert Léo Delibes (; 21 February 1836 – 16 January 1891) was a French Romantic composer, best known for his ballets and operas.
