The Ugly American (film)
''The Ugly American'' is a 1963 American adventure film directed by George Englund, written by Stewart Stern, and starring Marlon Brando, Sandra Church, Eiji Okada, Pat Hingle, Judson Pratt, Reiko Sato, and Arthur Hill. It is based on the 1958 novel ''The Ugly American'' by Eugene Burdick and William Lederer. The film was released on April 2, 1963, by Universal Pictures. Premise American ambassador Harrison MacWhite (Marlon Brando) travels to a Southeast Asian country beleaguered by rival factions, but MacWhite views the political situation only in the simplest terms: as a struggle between communism and democracy. By the time that the ambassador finally sees the resultant political upheaval as something far more complicated, it may be too late. Chulalongkorn University (CU, th, จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย, ), nicknamed Chula ( th, จุฬาฯ), is a public and autonomous research university in Bangkok, Thailand. William Job "Bill" Stout (September 4, 1927 – December 1, 1989) was an American journalist and sometime actor, known for his radio and television broadcasting career with CBS News. Early life and education Stout was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 4, 1927. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), majoring in English. Simon Scott (September 21, 1920 – December 11, 1991) was an American character actor from Monterey Park, California. He was best known for his role as Arnold Slocum on '' Trapper John M.D.'' and as General Bronson on ''McHale's Navy''. Career Scott became a company member at Peninsula Players Theatre in Fish Creek in 1950, Wisconsin using the name Dan Scott prior to his Hollywood success. He performed in many stage productions with the theater, including the 1948 production of ''The Second Man'', the 1950 production of '' You Can't Take it With You'' and the 1963 production of ''The Night of the Iguana''. Carl Benton Reid (August 14, 1893 – March 16, 1973) was an American actor. Early years Reid was born in Lansing, Michigan. He used his full name professionally because when he worked in radio, four other people in the business were named Carl Reid. Career For seven years, Reid performed in leading-man roles of productions at the Cleveland Play House. He achieved fame on the Broadway stage in 1939 as Oscar Hubbard, one of Regina Giddens's (Tallulah Bankhead) greedy, devious brothers in the play ''The Little Foxes'', and made his film debut reprising his role opposite Bette Davis in the 1941 film version. Philip Nott Ober (March 23, 1902 – September 13, 1982) was an American screen and stage actor. He later retired from acting to work as a diplomat. Ober is best remembered for his roles in the films ''From Here to Eternity'' (1953) and ''North by Northwest'' (1959). Judson Laire (August 3, 1902 – July 5, 1979) was an American film, stage, and television actor best known for starring as Lars Hansen in the early CBS television series, ''Mama'' from 1949 to 1957, as well as several daytime soap operas including ''As the World Turns'', '' The Nurses'', '' Love is a Many Splendored Thing'' and ''The Edge Of Night''. Laire was born in Pleasantville, New York. In a thirty-year stage career Laire appeared in ten Broadway productions. A resident of Clinton Corners, New York, he died at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, New York, in 1979 at 76.
