The Two Edged Sword
''The Two Edged Sword'' is a 1916 silent Vitagraph drama directed by George D. Baker. The film was written by Eugene V. Brewster and Lillian Case Russell, and it starred Edith Storey and Evart Overton. Plot A bored married woman (Josephine Earle) tired of her workaholic novelist husband (Jed Brooks) embarks on a trip with her friend and meets a handsome farmer she begins a fling with. The farmer (Logan Paul) falls head over heels, but the woman doesn't take it seriously. When her husband pays a surprise visit to the farm, the farmer realizes he's been had, and after the husband beats him in a fight, he commits suicide. His enraged sister (Edith Storey) vows vengeance. Lillian Case Russell (born Lulu E. Case; April 3, 1876 – June 2, 1947), often credited as L. Case Russell, was an American screenwriter during Hollywood's silent era. She was married to actor John Lowell Russell. Biography Lulu E. Case was born in Yankton, Dakota Territory on April 3, 1876. She graduated from Yankton High School in 1893. She worked as a schoolteacher in her hometown before moving to New York to pursue a career as a writer; she wrote for a number of newspapers and magazines around the turn of the century. She married actor John Lowell Russell in Manhattan in 1901; they had two children, future cinematographer John L. Russell and future actress Evangeline Russell. By 1925, they had relocated to Los Angeles, where she wrote scripts for Vitagraph and he worked as an actor. She wrote more than 30 scripts between 1914 and 1926. Edith Storey (March 18, 1892 – October 9, 1967) was an American actress during the silent film era. Early life Storey was born on March 18, 1892, in New York City to William Chase Storey and Minnie Storey (née Thorn). Her younger brother, Richard, also had a brief acting career. Storey began acting when she was a child. Her film career began with the film ''Francesca di Rimini'' (1908), also called ''The Two Brothers''. She would have two film roles in 1908, and a total of seventy-five by 1913. Many of these films were Westerns, as Storey was reportedly an excellent horseback rider and could perform her own stunts. Nicknamed Billy at the Star Film Ranch in Texas, she earned the good will of the seasoned cowboys in the Méliès film company for her ability to "ride anything with hair on it". Vitagraph Studios, also known as the Vitagraph Company of America, was a United States motion picture studio. It was founded by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith in 1897 in Brooklyn, New York, as the American Vitagraph Company. By 1907, it was the most prolific American film production company, producing many famous silent films. It was bought by Warner Bros. in 1925. Josephine Earle (February 23, 1892 – April 26, 1960/1961) was an American silent film actress who worked in the United States and the United Kingdom. Born as Josephine MacEwan (sometimes listed as McEwan), she was of Scottish descent. Her first role was in New York as the Beauty in Henry W. Savage's production of ''Everywoman'' (1911–12). In late 1917 she accepted an invitation to go to England and appear in the stage production of '' The Lilac Domino''. After a very stormy passage she arrived mid December with bombs dropping on London; ''"I was really surprised when I arrived to find London was not nearly so black as it was painted in New York."''
