The Tunnel Under The World
"The Tunnel under the World" is a science fiction short story by American writer Frederik Pohl. It was first published in 1955 in '' Galaxy'' magazine. It has often been anthologized, most notably in '' The Golden Age of Science Fiction'', edited by Kingsley Amis (1981). Plot Guy and Mary Burckhardt wake up in their house in Tylerton on June 15, having both had terrible nightmares, but they cannot recall the events of their dreams. Guy dismisses the dream and goes to work as usual, the downtown offices of Contro Chemicals, which operates a highly automated and robot-staffed petrochemicals plant. But something is not right; he is surrounded everywhere by loud and all-pervasive advertising jingles for everything from cigarettes to freezers. A colleague named Swanson tries to speak to him but apparently does not get the desired reaction from Burckhardt and leaves. ''Virtual Nightmare'' is a 2000 made-for-TV horror film directed by Michael Pattinson and starring Michael Muhney, Tasma Walton, and Todd MacDonald. The story was conceived in 1995 when writer David Tausik read the Philip K. Dick novel Time Out of Joint. Plot In the future the world has seemingly reached perfection. Dale Hunter, a junior advertising executive, begins to question the nature of his reality when he is in a car accident and glitches start to appear in his vision. ''The Tunnel Under the World'' (original Italian title ''Il tunnel sotto il mondo'') is a 1969 low-budget Italian science-fiction film directed and edited by Luigi Cozzi inspired by Frederik Pohl's novella of the same name. The screenplay was written by Tito Monego and Alfredo Castelli, best known as the creator of the comic book series ''Martin Mystère''. It was the directorial debut of a 21-year-old Luigi Cozzi. It began as a film school project and eventually wound up becoming a full-length feature film. Cozzi's work on this film brought him to the attention of famed horror film director Dario Argento and jump-started his career. ''Out of the Unknown'' is a British television science fiction anthology drama series, produced by the BBC and broadcast on BBC2 in four series between 1965 and 1971. Most episodes of the first three series were a dramatisation of a science fiction short story. Some were written directly for the series, but most were adaptations of already-published stories. The first three years were exclusively science fiction, but that genre was mostly abandoned in the final year in favour of horror/fantasy stories, with only one story based around science-fiction. Many videotapes of episodes were wiped in the early 1970s, as was standard procedure at the time. A large number of episodes are still missing, although some have resurfaced—for example, " Level Seven" from series two, originally broadcast on 27 October 1966, was returned to the BBC from the archives of a European broadcaster in January 2006.
