The Trooper Of Company K
''The Trooper of Troop K'' is a Lincoln Motion Picture Company film produced in 1917, directed by Harry A. Gant and starring Noble Johnson. It was the production company's second film. Set at the Battle of Carrizal, the film contains a battle scene with hundreds of extras, depicting African American U.S. soldiers fighting Mexican soldiers. The film originally consisted of 3 film reel, reels of 35 mm movie film. Most of this is now lost film. The small portion that survives is earliest extant fragment of Black film, Black-produced cinema. Synopsis Joe (Noble Johnson) is fond of Clara (Beulah Hall) but his inept romantic gestures do not impress her. Jimmy (Jimmie Smith) reacts with disgust to Joe's antics, and competes with Joe to win the affections of Clara. Harry Gant (director)
Harry Arthur Gant (February 11, 1881 - July 26, 1967) was a cinematographer and film director whose work includes African American films. He directed for the Lincoln Motion Picture Company. He was the only white person at the film company. He joined the African American film company after meeting Noble Johnson on a Universal Pictures set. Gant worked at the film company while also continuing to work for a major studio. He was also a stockholder in the fledgling film company. UCLA has a photograph of Gant and Johnson. Gatling Gun
The Gatling gun is a rapid-firing multiple-barrel firearm invented in 1861 by Richard Jordan Gatling. It is an early machine gun and a forerunner of the modern electric motor-driven rotary cannon. The Gatling gun's operation centered on a cyclic multi-barrel design which facilitated cooling and synchronized the firing-reloading sequence. As the handwheel is cranked, the barrels rotate and each barrel sequentially loads a single cartridge from a top-mounted magazine, fires off the shot when it reaches a set position (usually at 4 o'clock), then ejects the spent casing out of the left side at the bottom, after which the barrel is empty and allowed to cool until rotated back to the top position and gravity-fed another new round. This configuration eliminated the need for a single reciprocating bolt design and allowed higher rates of fire to be achieved without the barrels overheating quickly. An iris shot is a technique used in silent film and television sometimes to emphasize a detail of a scene above all others, more commonly to end or open a scene. The film camera's iris is slowly closed or opened, so that what is visible on film appears in a decreasing or increasing circle, surrounded by black. The iris shot used at the start of a scene is an iris in and an iris out is used at the end of a film/episode or a particular scene. ''Iris in'' is also used after a previous ''iris out'' to allow different episodes or scenes to begin in a more natural way. The film ''By Right of Birth'' premiered on June 22, 1921, in Los Angeles, California. This film is one of the few surviving films of the Lincoln Motion Picture Company, which is known as the first producer of race films and of such silent films as ''By Right of Birth''. The company was founded in 1916 and in 1923 produced its last movie, ''The Heart of a Negro.'' Background The film was directed by Harry Gant, who is also responsible for the films ''The Realization of a Negro's Ambition'' (1916) and ''Absent'' (1928). The story was by George Perry Johnson, both a writer and a member of the Lincoln Motion Picture Company executive board. Currently, only small pieces of this film still exist. The 10th Cavalry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army. Formed as a segregated African-American unit, the 10th Cavalry was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments in the post–Civil War Regular Army. The 9th Cavalry Regiment is a parent cavalry regiment of the United States Army. It is not related to the 9th Kansas Cavalry Regiment of the Union Army. Historically, it was one of the Army's four segregated African-American regiments and was part of what was known as the Buffalo Soldiers. The ''vaquero'' (; pt, vaqueiro, , ) is a horse-mounted livestock herder of a tradition that has its roots in the Iberian Peninsula and extensively developed in Mexico from a methodology brought to Latin America from Spain.
