The Trials Of Oz
''The Trials of Oz'' is 1991 video-taped BBC television drama shown in the UK on 9 November 1991 as part of BBC 2's ''Performance'' anthology series of single plays. The drama concerns the six-week trial in June and July 1971 of the joint editors of the British underground magazine '' Oz'' in which the three men were prosecuted on three charges, including obscenity, for the 28th issue known as Schoolkids Oz. It is based on the transcripts of the court case which were adapted by Geoffrey Robertson, who was junior defence counsel at the trial. The re-enactment features Hugh Grant as Richard Neville, Peter O'Brien as Jim Anderson, Kevin Allen as Felix Dennis, the three charged men. The production also featured Leslie Phillips as Judge Michael Argyle, Nigel Hawthorne as Brian Leary, Simon Callow as John Mortimer, Alfred Molina as George Melly, Lee Cornes as Marty Feldman, and Nigel Planer as John Peel. Michael Argyle (lawyer)
His Honour Michael Victor Argyle, (31 August 1915 – 4 January 1999) was a British judge at the Central Criminal Court of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1988. Earlier, as a barrister, he defended Ronnie Biggs and, as a judge, presided at the ''Oz'' obscenity trial. Early life Michael Argyle was born in Tamworth, Staffordshire in England. He received his formal education at Shardlow Hall prep school, Westminster School, and obtained a degree in the Law at Trinity College, Cambridge. He began practising as a Barrister in 1938. During World War II he served as a commissioned officer with the 7th Queen's Own Hussars, in India and the Italian theatres, being awarded the Military Cross for his leadership in an opposed crossing of the River Po in 1945. ''Hippie Hippie Shake'' is an unreleased British drama film produced by Working Title Films. It is based on a memoir by Richard Neville, editor of the Australian satirical magazine '' Oz'', and chronicles his relationship with girlfriend Louise Ferrier, the launch of the London edition of ''Oz'' amidst the 1960s counterculture, and the staff's trial for distributing an obscene issue. ''Hippie Hippie Shake'' stars Cillian Murphy as Richard Neville, with Sienna Miller as Louise. British film production company Working Title began development of ''Hippie Hippie Shake'' in 1998, but the film was repeatedly delayed, changing directors and screenwriters. John Peel
John Robert Parker Ravenscroft (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), known professionally as John Peel, was an English disc jockey (DJ) and radio presenter. He was the longest-serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004. Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. Martin Alan Feldman (8 July 1934 – 2 December 1982) was a British actor, comedian and comedy writer. He was known for his exophthalmos, prominent, strabismus, misaligned eyes. He initially gained prominence as a writer with Barry Took on the ITV (TV network), ITV sitcom ''Bootsie and Snudge'' and the BBC Radio comedy programme ''Round the Horne''. George Melly
Alan George Heywood Melly (17 August 1926 – 5 July 2007) was an English jazz and blues singer, critic, writer, and lecturer. From 1965 to 1973 he was a film and television critic for ''The Observer''; he also lectured on art history, with an emphasis on surrealism.
